Hmmmm, I totally forgot all about the Syndone album! I've got about 5 or six titles I'm trying to slot into the final spot in my Collab Top 10 of 2014 list, and now I have to throw that one into that pile as well! |
It's a great album, I didn't even notice it was 70 minutes long I saw they are selling a pack with the two albums at an interesting price... I'm tempted Sorry about that I'm also having trouble with the list, even though I certainly didn't listen to as many new albums as you I read that Vangelis review, I'll buy it for sure Still today: SOT - Redwings Nest Alpha Wave Movement - Horizons (Another very different album, it's not ambiental, every track has synth beats and it sounds like Ozric Tentacles and 80's/Booster TD) and

Yesterday:
Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome Leprous - Bilateral Leprous - Coal
Great day! Starting to really warm up to this band. Thanks again for the recommendation, Nick.
Today:
Kaukasus - I Kayo Dot - Coffins on Io
Another great day! CoI remains one of my favourites of 2014, but perhaps not absolute favourite anymore (A Silver Mt. Zion's "F**k Off Get Free..." looks to pip it to the post).
Still not on board with the vocals on the Kaukasus debut, but the music gets better with each listen. Mmmmm...

Pendragon - Men Who Climb Mountains Jean-Michel Jarre - Les Chants Magnetiquesm Icecross - s/t Arti e Mestieri - Live 1974 Opeth - Pale Communion - OK, I'm just going to say it...I find this album a crushing bore. And no, I'm not some metalhead pissing and moaning that `They're not metal anymore'! There's no excitement, very little energy, and the band seem to just be going through the motions. I even put on `Ghost Reveries', and although I'm not a massive fan of that one, it practically crackles with variety and energetic moments by comparison. Can someone tell me if the second half gets any better, because I've tried this album about ten times now, and I never leave it on long enough to get there...

Spinning some Jarre, I see. What are your thoughts on those? Nice Asia review by the way, I'll have to listen to that one since it's my PC's wallpaper since September Today: Steve Roach - A Deeper Silence (Not a very accessible album from him, very dark but it was nice to listen with the strong blowing wind outside ) Le Orme - Felona e Sorona Lisa Ono - The Music of António Carlos Jobim Pink Floyd - Animals (The magic is not really back: damn, I know every detail of it, even the lyrics, considering a don't care much about them. It was still very good to listen though, I'll listen again next year ) Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) (96/24 Stereo LPCM)

It's difficult, Sagi...A ton of how much you'll like it will depend on how much you really want to explore Barrett's lyrics and vocals. Most of it is focused on those two elements. Nolan is quite low key, and it takes a while for the grander solos to start showing up. It's by no means a bad album, but there's long stretches where it's dominated by heavier guitars and endless wordy lyrics from Barrett when you really just wish for some longer instrumental stretches and a break from his voice. In some ways, I appreciate it more than actually like it. The album takes at least twenty minutes to really start coming together, and it's a bit of a slog until that point. I do like that it's not just a band playing it safe and remaking the same tired material, but at the same time...I don't think hearing what oftens sounds like Barrett solo demos and then the others contributing little touches to his material is what a whole ton of Pendragon fans want to hear?? Sorry, mate....a month or two after we last spoke about it and I still can't give you much of an answer....the album is really frustrating me! If you've heard it, what are your thoughts?

Sam, I think both of those Jarre albums are decent. `Chants' is to my ears the stronger of the two (if only because many parts of `Equinoxe' sounds like a very safe remake of `Oxygene', if a lovely remake all the same!). They each have parts that annoy me, but I certainly don't regret picking them up cheap. I have `Rendezvous' on the way to me right now as well! Can I ask, is `Chronologie' from 1993 worth getting? I can grab it for a few dollars if you say yes! I haven't heard that particular Roach one. I recently picked up `Atmospheric Conditions' and `Vine, Bark and Spore', so I'll give them a listen in the next day or so...maybe tonight! Thanks about the Asia album review, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to listen to it! It was a very generous three stars....

Maybe check if it's on Progstreaming or something, Sagi, see if you kind of feel the same way? Tonights choices: Tangerine Dream – Le Parc, Destination Berlin Syndromeda – The Alien Abduction Phenomenon Paul Nagle - Fore Steve Roach – Vine, Bark and Spore (one of his more tribal, shamanistic works, with lots of drowsy chanting, but I find this one fairly dull) Robert Carty – Canyon, Ecoroots, Seascapes

Cool that you prefer Chants! (I just realised I always wrote the title wrong because Chants is not Fields like the English title; Fields in French is Champs but it's read the same way as Chants (which has the same meaning in English)... nice pun ) I agree with you about Equinoxe but I still prefer it over Chants, because I can't take it seriously, too many funny songs in it: what do you think about the last track? Approach Rendez-vous carefully, it has that over-produced 80's sound If you ask me, I prefer Chronologie to Rendez-vous (and Zoolook by the way), it has some very nice songs but also some forgetable ones..... including the 90's dance single, Part 4: I recall it sounded good when I was a kid but it sounds terribly dated now The first track is quite good though Also check his next album, Oxygene 7-13: it has the 70's sound, but you'll probably find it more original than Equinoxe I'll try that Asia album the next time I'm in a AOR mood. Really cool cover though

What do you think about that one? That album seem very different by your description, I'm curious to try that one Today: Magenta - Seven (Wow, this album is amazing! Best stuff I discovered this year so far) Sankt Otten - Morgen Wieder Lustig (Vangelis, Kraftwerk and Post Rock... an explosive mixture ) Syd Barrett - The Madcap of Laughs (Awful album, I couldn't even listen to the whole thing ) Renaissance - Prologue (Great album, I don't think I listened to this one before. They will play here in a few months and I don't want to miss that concert )
