Yesterday:
Ulver - Perdition City Ulver - Shadows of the Sun Cult of Luna - Salvation Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway Cult of Luna - Vertikal Cult of Luna - Vertikal II
Can't seem to really get into Ulver, however hard I try. CoL, on the other hand, I just love. One of my absolute favourite metal bands.
Today:
Thantifaxath - Sacred White Noise Opeth - Pale Communion Mastodon - Once More 'Round the Sun Animals as Leaders - The Joy of Motion

Opeth - Pale Communion - OK, I'm just going to say it...I find this album a crushing bore. And no, I'm not some metalhead pissing and moaning that `They're not metal anymore'! There's no excitement, very little energy, and the band seem to just be going through the motions. I even put on `Ghost Reveries', and although I'm not a massive fan of that one, it practically crackles with variety and energetic moments by comparison. Can someone tell me if the second half gets any better, because I've tried this album about ten times now, and I never leave it on long enough to get there... | I'm not completely sold on PC either. A slight improvement from Herritage, perhaps, but not by much. I think they should stick with what they do best, making metal albums. Then again, I'm not big on their metal albums either. I'd say no, Michael, the second half's not much better/different.
That AaL album really hit me today though. Man is it good! Feel it should make my top 10 list for 2014, but what to do, there's just no room for it. What album should it replace? Must think on that for a bit.

Syd Barrett - The Madcap of Laughs (Awful album, I couldn't even listen to the whole thing ) |
I remember that one being quite good, but it's been a while since I last spun it. Must give it a listen again soon, to reaffirm my judgement of it.

^ I would rather listen to 'The Final Cut', and I rated that album with 1 star How can this album have the same rating as 'A Saucerful of Secrets'?

Sam, I think both of those Jarre albums are decent. `Chants' is to my ears the stronger of the two (if only because many parts of `Equinoxe' sounds like a very safe remake of `Oxygene', if a lovely remake all the same!). They each have parts that annoy me, but I certainly don't regret picking them up cheap. I have `Rendezvous' on the way to me right now as well!
Can I ask, is `Chronologie' from 1993 worth getting? I can grab it for a few dollars if you say yes!
I haven't heard that particular Roach one. I recently picked up `Atmospheric Conditions' and `Vine, Bark and Spore', so I'll give them a listen in the next day or so...maybe tonight!
Thanks about the Asia album review, but I wouldn't be in a hurry to listen to it! It was a very generous three stars.... | Cool that you prefer Chants! (I just realised I always wrote the title wrong because Chants is not Fields like the English title; Fields in French is Champs but it's read the same way as Chants (which has the same meaning in English)... nice pun ) I agree with you about Equinoxe but I still prefer it over Chants, because I can't take it seriously, too many funny songs in it: what do you think about the last track? Approach Rendez-vous carefully, it has that over-produced 80's sound
If you ask me, I prefer Chronologie to Rendez-vous (and Zoolook by the way), it has some very nice songs but also some forgetable ones..... including the 90's dance single, Part 4: I recall it sounded good when I was a kid but it sounds terribly dated now The first track is quite good though Also check his next album, Oxygene 7-13: it has the 70's sound, but you'll probably find it more original than Equinoxe
I'll try that Asia album the next time I'm in a AOR mood. Really cool cover though

Oh yeah, that last track absolutely killed me, Sam! Like some kind of stupid polka waltz or someting! Cheers for your thoughts on those other two. I have heard `Zoolook' and didn't like it, but I loved how different and (probably) experimental it was for Jarre at the time. Appreciate it more than actually like it, I suppose. Glad you liked Magenta's `Seven, it's a beauty, eh?! I came across it many years ago, discounted to a few dollars in a heavy-metal bargain bin in a local music store! (I guess the cover does look a little metal!). I picked it up, and I was thinking `Hmmmm, I'm absolutely sure Magenta is a prog band....', so I took a chance....worked out very well, I own all their albums now. The only dud moment on that disc....when Rob Reed (I assume it's him?) sings lead vocals near the final sections of the first track! Just awful! Leave the singing to the lovely lady! Ha, you cracked me up with `Madcap Laughs'...I have not spun that in years. Used to adore it. It's kind of like listening to a mind unravelling live on tape.... I've got a Syd box-set, and it has a lot of alternate takes that head off in all directions. From what I recall really reading up on it, it wasn't unusual for each take to sound totally different to the last, due to Syd's scattered mind. Pretty sure it's members of the Soft Machine backing him up on that one? Anyway, point I'm trying to get at is that I think the story behind it is probably more interesting that the actual music?

That track is also on Les Concerts en Chine but with the title The Last Rumba, so it's suposed to be a Rumba. That's exactly my opinion about 'Zoolook', but I still prefer it over 'Rendez-vous'. I really like their Yes influences (without losing originality) and her voice is incredibly sweet I don't know if it's Rob, he never sings on Sanctuary I feel alone on this one, there isn't a single 1 star review of it This isn't progressive nor spacey nor psychedelic nor beautiful acoustic work: this is simply pathetic. The compositions are very childish, the musicianship doesn't exist (it's like everyone is completely uninspired and playing against their will) and the songs seem like they can crumble apart at any second because of anything, most probably Syd. I think its rating is a slap in the face to those great musicians/bands who do their best work and play their hearts out and get lower ratings than this. What rating would this have if it was released by someone else? And I knew the story behind before listening to it Today: Asia - Alpha Amon Duul II - Wolf City Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

Awesome album Today: Michael Pinnella - Ascension (I think I'll have to update my list ) Rick Wakeman - No Earthly Connection (Ironic title this is more earthly than Journey, as in less pompous ) Annot Rhül - Leviathan (Very nice Space Rock album from last year) Renaissance - Ashes are Burning (This album is incredibly sweet ) Petrus Castrus - Mestre (An interesting Prog portrait of the insurgent portuguese society of the early 70's, I can really feel their pain Probably not very good for non-portuguese listeners, but it's also not known here: I only found out about them here ) PFM - Un Minuto (Better than the live version of Per Un Amico, but still not very interesting as a live album) Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past OST (It's incredible how great these video game soundtracks were made with such tecnological limitations. Now these limitations don't exist but many companies don't seem to care about what original music they put in their games )
