Finland. Pekka Pohjola is the main reason for this, though Sweden is just behind ...

If it was that easy, then Denmark wouldn't be part of Scandinavia... And I had to look it up, since I thought Finland is a fairly flat land, but yeah, there is this odd Finniish protuberance stretching between Sw and Nor where the highest altitude is 1017m. We can talk about a cultural Scandinavia (or even an ethnic one, FTM), which includes Iceland, and why not, even Greenland) and Finland... OK, the Finns are ethnically vastly different than the rest of the Scandics, since their origins are Altaic, but there is a strong Swedish presence in the country... The Finns have spent hundreds of years tossed & turned between Russia and Sweden, and give them a choice, they'll go for the lesser of two evils: the Swedes.

Yes, I agree. But it's all about languages. How about the history and the culture? I think Finland is the part of the Swedish Empire - or mayby part of the Russian Empire.

Had to go with Sweden, despite some great RIO from Finland. Finland also has some of my favorite rock and folk-rock musicians, but I guess they don't count. I should note that the first prog band I saw from the Nordic countries was Danish: the great Burnin' Red Ivanhoe. Also, Secret Oyster, Alrune Rod and Doctor Dopojam. I lived in Denmark for a year.

I grow more besotted with my beloved Finland by the day.
My latest find is Veli Kujala's album Hyperorganism. Not prog, mind you, but wonderful.

You may think that as much as you like but it doesn't make it any more correct. |
Scandinavia is defined by the mountain range called Skanderna. It runs through Norway, Sweden and nort west Finland. So yes, Charles R is more right than you are.

Agree with the above - particularly the ECM label releases from Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, etc. (although not 'present')

Love most of what's coming out of the present Norwegian jazz-prog scene, so there's where my vote goes.

The only one of these that I'm not crazy for is Denmark (though they still had the fantastic Culpeper's Orchard back in the day).
Norway's put out some great stuff recently, but I think I'll have to vote for Sweden. And Finland is the winner if we only consider jazz fusion.

I think Finland is a part of Scandinavia as a historical whole. I often visit Suomi and I saw many Swedish there. And in music too. By the way, I heard a fine music on every street in Stockholm. Not a prog, but it's always beautiful - the folk, the rock and so on. And I think ABBA has many prog elements.

Yes, many wonderful bands almost in every small Finnish town. Finnish music admires me. But in prog rock I vote Swedish scene.

My preference mirrors the current vote count. Sweden followed by Norway then Finland.
