Honestly, I'm not excited about the contents of the bonus DVD even if I absolutely love the new music. The interviews I've already seen online, and footage from some playback event doesn't seem very interesting to me. What I would like to see is concert footage of this band performing The Red Planet live. Maybe that will happen someday? |

The Red Planet is Wakey's best effort since Criminal Record.
(And I know that's not saying a lot...)

Criminal Record came out in 1977! It's probably my favorite, too. Still, Rick's made a few fine albums since then, like White Rock The Burning 1984 (yes, really) Zodiaque The Wakeman & Wakeman outings (five studio, one live) A bunch of great solo piano recordings Return to the Centre of the Earth Themes Retro & Retro 2 (recorded entirely vintage synths and Mellotron) A bunch more live albums, take your pick Out There, a N.E.R.E. album that features Damian Wilson on vocals ...lots to enjoy!!

My CD arrived this morning, not had time to listen to it yet but it is a nice package. To be honest the squiggle on the front could be anyone's signature, but it is the first CD I've ever bought with a pop-up centre piece and the booklet has some nice photos and facts about Mars.
Here's hoping the music is good as well.

I agree he has done some wonderful music since. I like most of what you wrote here, but as a whole CD, I think Out There is among his very best. |

Pretty uninspired but exceptionally well produced. Out There was a much better album but of course that one had vocals. As a purely instrumental effort it does have some appeal , the bass player is great and Rick is okay but it's nothing to get excited about. I've only played it once though although not in any great hurry to play it again.
It reminds me a bit of Oldfeld's 'Return To Ommadawn' which was also an average uninspired album. Inspiration has long gone. The seventies has long gone but respect to one of the great legends of prog.

With all due respect, after just one listen it is way to soon to have an opinion about an album. I listened to it every day for two weeks before I wrote my review of it, and that for me is less time than I usually give. |

More so because I thought Richard would like it. ![]() But it's best to have a listen for yourself. I like it a lot. Best thing Rick's done since the Retro's.

Christ I would never force myself to listen to anything that much if I wasn't convinced. Nearly everything I've bought this year is clearly better. I have a lot of time for Rick and he is a great personality but this is not getting anywhere near the best thing's he's done.

Personally, I think The Red Planet is his best! But I'm not trying to impose my view on anyone else, I'm merely saying give it another chance. I too like Out There, but that was Rick trying hard to appeal the Neo-Prog/Prog Metal crowd. The Red Planet is more of a return to his classic period of the 70's. I predict we will see more positive ratings/reviews rolling in ![]() Edited by SouthSideoftheSky - July 10 2020 at 00:31 |

I haven't been able to get The Red Planet yet, however, I did love Oldfield's Return to Ommadawn, and I thought it came back to Oldfield's 70's sound very nicely and with a convincing quality... so I guess I still have hope for Wakeman's latest. |

It's consistent enough. Maybe for Rick that's a big thing

People are talking about it because it's the best thing Rick's done since Return to the Centre of the Earth.
And I say this as someone who has gotten rid of more mediocre Wakeman albums than most people buy! The Red Planet is one for the ages!

Overall, I liked Out There better than Return to the Centre of the Earth, and I liked the Retro albums almost as much.

For a brief moment there, I thought Roger Waters had a new album out, when I saw the initials in the thread title.

Hi,
Good thing that RW is not on my list of things to get ... I have at least 1,000 CD's to get before I even consider RW! For my tastes he makes a much better interviewer (fine shows with several folks!), than he does musician.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Red Planet has a lot of great music, but I miss vocals and more variation in the songs. I know it's an RW album, but it's too much keys. :P
