the wrong crowd here for Nightwish appreciation; they were a highly contentious addition at the time and I don't think that feeling has altered much... try over at Metal Storm for a more representative set of ratings. |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Glass Hammer with a 23 studio album run spanning over 30 years are totally 'unbeatable' in this regards. I stand up for their cause and on a good day with a following wind would put them in my top ten bands of all time. Currently listening to Arise (3.78).
Skallagrim; Into The Breach (3.99) is their current highest rated album. PAH! |

Ditto on Triumvirat. Their first 4 albums are classics of symphonic prog IMO, but no 4-stars... |

I suppose I was thinking 'proper' prog and also bands/artists that are well reviewed and acknowledged within the community (Rundgren is more known as a producer). I know I'm making up the rules here but hey ho ![]() |

Alquin. Mountain Queen is top 10 for me and Best Kept Secret is obviously underrated.

Happy the Man's highest rated studio album is Crafty Hands (3.91) then their self-titled debut (3.85).

I'm not surprised with any of the bands mentionned so far... and IMHO deservedly so. Either those artistes mentionned are prog-related or second knives, and I haven't found scandalous they didn't score an album above 4
I was first puzzled at Grobschnitt's presence in a list on page 1, but realized that Solar Music LIVE (not studio) ![]() ![]() |

I'm not surprised Kraftwerk or Tortoise (etc...) hasn't got any four star rated albums here at PA, but I love both and rate quite a few of their albums a four - or more. |

Well I read the OP as a bit of a rant and some answers have promised to skew the rating averages - probably by overrating the albums. IMHO (again), the forum is way tooo focused on ratings and top lists. . Edited by Sean Trane - 15 hours 36 minutes ago at 03:59 |

^Yeah I know but I'm seen worse. Those RYM-kids are literally obsessed with ratings. "If the latest Swans-album drop below 4.00 I'm gonna kill myself!"
I just enter these conversations while procrastinating to say "hey everyone I like Kraftwerk a lot". That's all. The ratings are irrelevant to me - and Kraftwerk. That said, high ratings/high praise (on RYM) may pique my interest to some album or band I'm unfamiliar with. |

Hi,
The one band that I think deserves to be here, is an oddball one .. The Edgar Broughton Band. Not totally progressive, but quite different, and a band that has had a lot of attention in the area of politics, however, they also had quite an interesting side of spirituality. Not sure that even Edgar would care to think of his band as progressive" but at least one album (OORA) is quite experimental, and really special of an album, in that there is very little in it that is "conventional" or fits a design of some kind. That alone, makes it progressive, lest we think that three things are required to call it "progressive". It is a tough listen, because at the start, it was a very busy band on various demonstrations and parties, with the early attention on war ... with "Out Demons Out" which is fairly well known and they have several versions of this from the regular song to the 20+ minutes of it in concert. The one thing that is not found here, is the "pretentiousness" of it being something or other. And on that alone, it is worth some attention. At least, you know the anger is real, and not fake and forgotten the next day. But I'm guessing that most folks would not give this band a 2 rating because it does not bother with ideas about music. Its lyrics are much more important several times, and this might turn off some progressive folks, as you won't find crap stories here. The band was related/friends to The Pink Fairies and Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I think I could make a bigger list than this, but time only permits a short search. All of these have at least one album in their discography worthy of four or more stars:

Todd, to be sure. Grobschnitt, Triumvirat, and Paatos certainly have a right to a four star or two (rockpommel, dimple, timeloss, respectively), not to mention Jaga Jazzist and Art Bears.
