In all fairness I'm not electric at all. I do like aproximatly everything, but only the best. At this point in time I'm still just scratching the surface of what music entails.

I have a relativly small record collection (IMO, my friends think it's way too large) but most of it is in the neo-rock / poprock / heavy metal genre, 500 records is not enough to claim you know all the bands.

There are some forummembers around who i do believe have great knowledge of music, and Prog music in particalair and I try to learn from them, and hope to expand my record collection at a rate of 4 albums a month, so in 20 jears I hope to be somewhat eclectic.

I voted for other for I think M@x, Maani and assorted people, have at least listened to most artists listed on the progarchives, which I didn't have the chance too (I need money) just yet.

And of course cert isn't mentioned, but that's probably because he's a bassplayer and they are usualy only missed when they're not around

I'm always almost unlucky _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Id5ZcnjXSZaSMFMC Id5LM2q2jfqz3YxT

When it comes to knowing what styles they like other than prog... none of us know enough about that... We don't really discuss that here too often...

It's so true. I expected much more of my 'TOTO' thread for example. I don't understand why so many prog afficionados regard them as a plain pop band, they often forget that TOTO released some gems, in which they blend hard-rock, jazz-rock, soul and pop : 'Toto', 'Toto IV', 'Toto VII' being all very good works, in term of both music and vocals (Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, Joseph Williams and David Paich have all a marvellous voice).

i would consider my record collection (about 2000) reasonably eclectic but in a narrow way -

i like a lot of different artists but not a lot of styles. For example. I have very little reggae aside from the bits of Bob Marley (which, while brilliant, I would consid3er white man's reggae). I have no dub, dancehall, very little ska etc.

I don't have a lot of soul, bar some atlantic, stax stuff and some classic motown (mostly stevie wonder).

I don't have much country bar alt country like ryan adams, gillian welch etc and some classic stuff like hank williams, emmylou harris (but only the gram parsons falvoured stuff like elite hotel)

I don't have much techno. I just don't like it. I have the standard stuff that appeals to oldies like me - underworld, leftfield etc. but the rest of it passed me by.

The bulk of my collection consist of rock and pop music, jazz and classical. within those confines it's pretty eclectic, so while I have catholic taste, it's limited to certain genres.

so not the most weird and wonderful. Though I will stick on barbara streisand and metallica or arvo part and the allman brothers in the same listening session!

Anyway, i think eclecticism is often a function of age and experience. when I was a teenager i listened to a lot of hard rock and metal, it got me into prog, which got me into other things and whole other worlds opened up as I heard more and more music. I'm in my mid-30s now so I've been exposed to a lot of music.

The bottom line for me is simply whether it has a decent tune. Can't stand genres, I just like music.
