Topic: Favorite Southern-Rock Band Posted: June 10 2005 at 14:18 |
Yes, I know this is Prog-Rock forum, but I am curious to know what Southern-Rock band appeals the most to Progressive Music listeners...

The Dixie Dregs a Southern Rock band? Seem more like Fusion to me ...
Anyway, my vote goes to the Black Crowes.

I'd have to say Skynyrd but I'm a pretty big fan of southern rock as a whole

Yeah, Dregs are quite an enigma. A southern-rock/jazz-fusion band from Augusta, Georgia. Give a listen to tunes like Country House Shuffle, Moe Down, Ridin' High, or Where's Dixie (too name a few) to get a heavy dose of their southern influence.

The Allman Brothers Band because of their great instrumentals.
Like High Falls on the Win, Lose Or Draw - album .

I'm from Virginia, so you don't have to tell me about Southern Rock. I would go with the Allmans. Especially the Duane era. They invented the whole genre. I would put Duane up against just about any rock guitarist, with the exception of Jimi, prog or not. I remember Steve Howe calling him in a Guitar Player mag interview in '74 the best American rock guitarist and was a major influence on him. He loved him. Which at the time I thought was pretty cool, prog admiring the southern boys and all. Of course Steve also liked Steve Morse as well.

marktheshark -
great post. I agree Duane was a MONSTER player. And I don't even like slide guitar as general rule. They've had some great ones in that band. I saw Dickey Betts live once and he was so hot, I don't think Ritchie Blackmore would have gone on stage after him! Though I've heard from others that seeing Dickey was 50/50, sometimes hot, sometimes cold. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are no slouches either...but I'm with you on Duane.

You know, everytime I hear Blue Sky I just get tears thinking where Duane would've gone if it weren't for that fateful motorcycle accident. That solo was so beautiful and melodic. Granted, Duane was blues based but he could just dance around the blues and screw around with it and make it almost prog.

Dixie Dregs a Southern band? More like a Fusion Rock band..... Any band that used to have Jordan Rudess in it makes it cool

Really close between Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band. In
the end I voted Skynyrd as they seem to be lagging behind a bit.

I have to go with Molly Hatchet, although .38 Special is a close second.

There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

ol' Lynyrd Skynrd does the trick for me ... Free Bird, Curtis Loew,
Simple Man, That Smell, Sweet Home Alabama, Call Me The Breeze, Workin
For MCA, Saturday Night Special ... the band had too many good songs
for me to ignore, even if the Allmans also had their moments ...
outside of the obvious big two, I'd go for Little Feat, Black Oak
Arkansas and Molly Hatchet in that order ... anybody a fan of the
Hatchet song Fall Of The Peacemakers ... I love that one ...

Outside the Allmans, I go with Little Feat. Great combination of funk, blues and jazz. I always considered Waiting For Columbus one of the great live rock albums. Mainly 'cause I was there at Lisner Auditorium in '77 when they recorded it. Beautiful!

Even though they're mostly from Canada, let's not forget The Band. Levon was from Arkansas.

The Allman Brothers ,The Fillmore Concerts and Eat a peach are testiment to what a great blues band they were.
Little Feat are also great, listen to their live CD "Waiting for Columbus".
I'm not sure whether the Dixie Dregs can be called southern rock, certainly their good but more in the rock/ jazz fushion.
You didn't mention Goverment Mule which are a great live band.
