 I would like to ask this...the late 80s to early 00s seemed to have such a great number of good rock bands: Smashing Pumpkins, RageATM, Chili Peppers, Janes, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Oasis, Breeders, Green DAy, White Stripes, Radiohead, Pixies, Wilco, Cranberries, Phish, Beck, Babes in Toyland, No doubt, Spoon, to name a few.....

What are the comparable current rock bands of this decade?  I'd like to check some out. Please don't give a huge list, but just the one or two bands/albums I should most check out. 

(Looking for generally mainstream rock here, not pop, rap, or prog.  Also, this thread seeks bands who began after 2000 and still active.)

Good luck with this, Jim, generally the only thing around today is the latest generic X Factor/XXX's Got Talent/Cover artist garbage, or what is considered R&B by today's standards! Brainless pap

My guess is something like Coldplay would probably be closest. Not too thrilling.

Best to run back to the blissful sanctuary that is prog and ignore all this other guff!

I recently purchase New Horizons from the band The Answer.  I read an article about them in Classic Rock magazine and they want to be the next big thing.

I'd say that you might want to check out Alter Bridge.  They are the continuation of the band Creed, with Myles Kennedy as lead vocalist.  (You may know him from being Slash's current vocalist).

I created a top 100 non-prog list from Progfreak, which seemed to have many AOR bands on it which I really enjoy but if that isn't your thing, probably wouldn't work and since the bands are not well known wouldn't really qualify as "great".  A couple of bands/artists that did show up were Arcade Fire and Joe Bonamassa (if you are looking for something in a blues rock vein).  Another band that came up was Airbourne, who are an AC/DC-like band that might appeal if you like that kind of thing.

There are many other good artists, but these are the ones I feel most confident recommending. I'll let others handle the other artists.

I'm not the biggest fan but you may enjoy Kings Of Leon and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Trombone Shorty, a mix of rock blues funk r&b wrapped up in a New Orleans jazz flavor. I have the Backatown album. Very good!

May not be the "rock" category but it does get heavy in places. Some big names participated, Jeff Beck and others.

I would also say The Black Keys, Bonnamassa and his short lived band Black Country Communion as well...and I like Jack Whites lp Blunderbuss.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Most of the ones I know about are obscure local artists who haven't released albums yet.  A couple of these are Ruby Armada and Delta Sol Revival, both of whom are working on albums and have several tracks uploaded to their websites.  Ruby Armada is a hard-hitting alternative/punk rock band with blunt, direct material that's still complex enough to be interesting.  DSR is a blues/rock/funk/latin fusion group composed of some really talented musicians.  Their music is quirky eclectic retro-type stuff that is a joy to listen to.

I just discovered the band Tame Impala.  Retro-ish indie psych-rock.  I think you would really enjoy them.  For some reason I'm currently unable to post videos, but you can easily find them on youtube.

I like Yeah Yeah Yeahs but I am more partial to their debut LP, the first I heard by them and imo the roughness of the sound is really appealing.

I will limit myself to two suggestions for the time being ... in the britpop revival, Kaiser Chiefs were quite good, especially their first two albums (there third was nothing special and I haven't even bothered with their fourth after hearing the samples).


The indie 'scene' has spawned many great bands, I am especially fond of those associated with the experimental edges of the genre, I pretty much started with Deerhoof and went through related artists on lastfm and loved them all. Given your tastes Jim, I would say Fiery Furnaces might be a good way to dig into that scene...
