So, you're actually discussing if syphilis is preferable to leprosy?

Grow up.

Well... I'm not really keen on either (I suppose I'm too European for that...Wink), but I would not compare either to syphilis or leprosy. I wouldn't do that even if DT were in question....Tongue

Springsteen continues to push himself to grow as an artist and musician.  His lyrics on "The Ghost of Tom Joad" are some of the most poignant and heart-wrenching ever created and his storytelling ability is abundantly masterful throughout his catalogue of work.  He is unique in every sense of the word.  Mellencamp has created some memorable tunes in his day but he has long since ceased to be an evolving artist of note in the USA.

Only his ability too wave the American[IMG]height=17 alt="Thumbs Down" src="smileys/smiley21.gif" width=23 align=absMiddle> flag has kept him going. If springsteen COULD SING, WRITE MUSIC, or  PLAY GUITAR, perhaps we would take him more seriously. His blazoned performences do not fool real music fans, only propel them. There is a very fine line between popularity and quality." Springy" likes to play this ground.

Mellencamp is genuine, but insipid. His flag waving is from the heart redneck. Mellencamp is country gone pop - perhaps the first. Bush voters aside. I wouldn't give Mellencamp much room.

Absolute rubbish! Sorry, but one has to see this man in concert. If you have ever experienced a live Springsteen show, no way could these words ever be honestly uttered. I saw him on the Born In The USA tour and the man leaves it all out on the stage. Besides, anybody who can pen a song as brilliant as "Born To Run" is anything but a talentless hack. That's like saying Michael Jordan was a mediocre basketball player.

It's a shame so many eyes have been blinded by their prog-snobbery, should have expected it on this site.

I'd have to side with The Boss on this one, especially his 70s output. I've seen him multiple times, and he puts on a hell of a show. I don't care for his politics either, but the music and lyrics are top notch. Not everything has to be in 11/8 time with virtuoso playing ability and sci-fi related lyrics.

It's straight ahead rock-n-roll, but good straight ahead rock-n-roll.

I don't like either, but Springsteen annoys me more, so I guess Mellencamp.
