So I saw HAIM on SNL a few weeks ago and kind of liked it. Should I be punched for that? Reminded me of Luscious Jackson a little.

Electric Six was pretty interesting, I should explore some more.
My personal favourite of bands that debuted after 2000 and are not prog is Everything Everything. It's not particularly rocking, but rock is probably the best fit for their general approach. But you HAVE to ignore their vocals to get into them, unless, that is, you do like that style of singing. Both of their albums, 'Man Alive' and 'Arc', are very interesting.
Kinda surprised to see that Tame Impala hasn't been mentioned yet. One of my absolute favourite modern rock bands. Think Beatles meets Dungen and you're not that far off. Both of their albums are brilliant, and I can never decide which one I love the most.
