Sorry for DT fans, but in my humble opinion...any thing by Dream Theatre. These guys are not song writers. They just string a crap load of technical segments together. Complex? Yes. But unskilled in song writing. I have listened to alot of their stuff and just find it so uninspiring.[IMG]height=17 alt=Dead src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle> | DT are prog metal, not neo I'm not keen on them either

The album "Just a reason to be out there" by Italian band Jester's Joke, simply awful. Some one mentioned Ricocher, haven't heard any of their albums but they are the worst neo prog band that I've seen live, extremely disappointed with the music, the album covers are kind of cool tough.

I really like Seasons End even though I generally dislike Marillion .
In my view Neo Prog gets bashed (wrongly) for not being 'real' prog.Well here some news for you ..it isn't meant to be!! The problem with neo prog is when the bands think they can emulate a band like say Genesis. However when they create a new style that is their own then I get interested.Seasons End and IQ's 'Ever' are my favourite neo prog albums for precisley the reason that they have little in common with seventies symph prog.I like different, perhaps embrace different and even appreciate different.

Oh, well - too many to name any.
And I am not about bashing the whole genre - it produces true masterpieces as any genre of prog. But the problem with this genre is that there are too many bands working in it, and too many of them sound too similar to each other.

man! i know many neo-prog albums and i don't remember having rated any album less than 4 stars!
to me neo-prog is the most consistent subgenre in terms of quality.

Solitary Witness by Landmarq is another one. Deceptive it was, ranked highly but void of written reviews. Neo-Prog is one treacherous sub-genre to explore.

I like lots of neo-prog, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen Pallas in the last 25 years, so expect some disagreement here.
The Wedge, Brave and Nomzamo are probably picks because they are not representitive of the pidgeonhole that is "NEO". It's what happens if you're daft enough to think that these labels can represent a long lived band's entire career. They're not my favorites by the respective bands, but then they sure aren't Neo-prog by the pompous American rules of excessive sub-genre labelling either.
After all, this site has Niadem's Ghost listed as neo-progressive. Even the people who live for these labels are too bloody lazy to do a good job of maintaining them. :)
As for the Pallas defense - they've always been a great live act, and until they reformed in the late 90s their albums have always been compromised affairs. Without the pressure of trying to make a living working for a major label, the recordings have become stronger and stronger. The Dreams of Men is a bloody fantastic prog album, neo or not. And, as last weekend at RoSFest demonstrated, they are still a great live act.

Of the ones I know the worst one must be IQ - Nomzamo
PS I just got Arena - The Visitor and it's utterly brilliant! I'm listening for the 4th time now and I'm hooked!

I like neo-prog and the word “hate” to describe any of it sounds a bit strong, except perhaps for one album (filed under 'neo-prog' on this site): a thing called Kingdom
of Ends by Cathedral. Man, oh man... the aural equivalent of
passing a kidney stone (rushes out of the room, covers both ears... )

Sometimes, people are just curious. It's not necessarily negativity. The problem lies when those who hate the genre come in and say, "Evey album is terrible." They should just not reply instead of making themselves seem like an attention-hungry fool.

I agree entirely, if you don't like the music then why post in a thread about it?

OK,I must admit,I LOVE neo-prog,but some albums really SUCK! PENDRAGON "Kowtow" ARENA "Contagion" FISH "Vigil in a Wilderness of a Mirror" TWELFTH NIGHT "Fact and Fiction" KINO "Pictures" PLACKBAND "After the Battle" ASGARD "Imago Mundi" as well as "Arkana" VIOLET DISTRICT "Terminal Breath" AGENESS "Imagines by Ageness" Very dissappointing...besides the last three ones were in my wishlist, and I spent a great deal of time/money searching for them...

why is PALLAS so unpopular on these threads? at the time of their release, i thought "sentinel" and "the wedge" were really good albums, i have them on vinyl and still play them. admittedly "sentinel" was a bit rough round the edges but it was a debut album, a pretty good one at that. they were one of the better bands producing any prog at all during the early 80's and should be lauded for helping to "carry the torch" during a difficult period in prog's evolution, and after almost breaking up they carried on and continue to produce fine music.
