Well, if we're going start comparing ELP and TRIUMVIRAT, I'd say that "Spartacus", whilst an excellent album (love those synths), is not as good as ELP's finest. However, "Illusions On A Double Dimple" *is* as good as ELP's finest, both from the musical point of view - melody, complexity, orchestration, backing - and from the point of view of concept and lyrical content. OK, Hans Paps' German accent is sometimes a little bit too evident in his singing in English, but that's only a minor quibble. A Prog Rock masterpiece, in my opinion.

Tis quite good, and the band is top-notch (especially the keys & drums) but you'll have to get past the fact that Triumvirat are HIGHLY ELP-derivitive. (Those who maintain otherwise are deluding themselves, IMO.) |

ELP are superb for the most part, but still don't touch Yes.

I saw Triumvirat in 1975 with Fleetwood Mac(pre Stevie Nicks) and Jefferson Starship (Pre- crappy pop verison). They played about a 45 minute set and I was unimpressed. They had all the tech parts of ELP with none of the passion. I heard Spartacus later and I agree with 3 Fates. I think that Jürgen FRITZ copied Emerson right down to the leather pants. Well, i like both bands because they are in complete contrast to each other...Both are inventive....but ELP are the fast loud group....and Yes are the 'mature' slower rock....they are both different. I love ELP because each note keeps you interested...some of Yes i feel isn't that brilliant but majority is fantastic....at the moment, i listen to more Yes than ELP...but ELP overall are the best

Hard to say for me, I consider both of them intermediate prog bands which I both like to listen to. But I don't really get why you guys all love them, especially Yes.... I'd really like to get into it and i love songs like "close to the edge", but it's just more boring than most of my other favourite stuff ..... What am I doing wrong??? What albums should i get??? btw, I don't know which one's better.... |

BebieM, If you want to get to know ELP, bearing in mind your current avatar I'd recommend starting with "Trilogy" - see the reviews here: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD. asp?cd_id=1871 And then, if you like that and want to experience their harder edge, try "Brain Salad Surgery" - see the reviews here: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD. asp?cd_id=1872

Go for the gusto, did I lead you wrong on Clearlight - Symphony? ELP - Brain Salad Surgery or Very Best of is a good place to start. YES - Relayer or 90125 The young bull and the old bull stood on the hill overlooking the herd. The young bull said" Hurry! hurry! lets run down there and get us one! The old bull replied " Lets walk down there and have 'em all !!! |

The Yes Album and Fragile probably have the best balance between accessibility and quality. If you like those, move on to Relayer and Close to the Edge. |

Actually the best place to start is always at the beginning. The ability to chart a band's growth and see their progression thru the years in some ways defines who they are. ELP's first album is quite remarkable if not exactly an easy place to start. Of course the 3 fates in on that album... When I first heard it, the church organ sound was very harsh to me... but that second fate... is just the most beautiful piano piece ever written.. and now I find I really love the first fate... couldn't live without it. Of course Lucky Man is on that album also... and anyone getting into ELP should start with Lucky Man.... Sort of same with Yes... altho I don't like Time and A Word... starting from "The Yes Album" and working your way thru their catalog from there... would be the appropriate way to do it, I think! I certainly would never start to get to know Yes.. by 90125... Edited by threefates |

Of course not. I'd suggest Fragile, Close To The Edge, Relayer, or even Drama, which is an ass-kicker. I dunno about telling people to start at the very beginning. That can be frightening, considering some groups (like Tangerine Dream). With ELP I'd much rather suggest Brain Salad Surgery. It's my favorite album of theirs, too. Hell, the ELPowell one, even. And I'd tell them to stay far away from that 3 crud (hey, Linda, that's Emerson & Palmer without the 'L'!) or In The (Not) Hot Seat.
