Well with a new Jethro Tull, Rush, and DT coming out it could be really good by the summer.

The new Lamb of God is really good too. Somewhat slow start, but looks promising.Thumbs Up

Slow start? I don't think so:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Anthony and the Johnsons - The Crying Light
The Appleseed Cast - Sagarmatha
Balmorhea - All is Well, All is Silent
Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Sylvain Chauveau - The Black Book of Capitalism
Dälek - Gutter Tactics
From Monument to Masses - On Little Known Frequencies
Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country (album of the year?)
If These Trees Could Talk - Above the Earth, Below the Sky
The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Mutations EP
Malajube - Labyrinthes
Metric - Fantasy
Mono - Hymn of the Immortal Wind
A.C. Newman - Get Guilty
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

Don't forget Indukti and OSI.
=)
I'm extremely excited for Nils on guest vocals on the Indukti album.  The sample song on their myspace sounds awesome.
I also have very high expectations for OSI with Gavin Harrison on drums.

^ How is it? I haven't purchased Frusciante solo albums in the past - I wouldn't want to listen to an hour of guitar noodling.Wink

Oh, it's so much more than druggy guitar noodling: beautiful orchestrations, excellent songwriting, some great scorching solos (there is one by Johnny Marr sounding a lot like Fripp), very tasteful use of electronics and a simply overwhelming feel of "mellow majesty" throughout. I know, my description sound like drivel, but the album is really, really worth it, IMO.

^ maybe I'll get it! If you think it's prog you can also tag and rate it at PF ... that way it will also appear on the ProgRadar feed (see my shamelessly plugging thread in the GTWO section).Smile

^Tool? Really! I thought more like Opeth and Pain of Salvation. Excellent all the same.

Ironic that I started this thread recently since it seems the years about to step up a gear. We had the PoS DVD last week, Mastodon next week, Wobbler I think will be available generally the week after that and IQ not long after that. Big smile
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I think we have come to a conclusion:
2009 is not off to a slow start.
A quick look on the internet reveals there is already a big number of new 2009 releases.

The new Mastodon album is a BEAST!
Greater is the man who conquers himself, than he who conquers a hundred times a hundred on the battlefield.

Indeed, IQ's Frequency will be with us soon.  I have heard versions of 3 of the new songs (there's 7 on the new album) and they all sound great, particularly Stronger Than Friction, which blew my socks off when I saw them live late last year.
