Whoa, I'd never seen that before. Call me validated! Thanks Harold. Anyways, I think the real concept of the album is the 2 sides telling the same story, but from different perspectives, being the left and right sides (of the brain?) The main theme seems to be trying to make something of yourself and failing. And yeah, there is lso the stress on interpersonal relations, it's not just about him anymore. Although I really like the concept of the fragile, my favorite is the concept of with teeth, although I like the album less. |

I don't know if this should be a new forum topic, or listed here under replies. NIN are a terrific band, and should definitely be considered crossover prog or prog related. However, if we are discussing Nine Inch Nails, we should also be discussing the band Ministry, which started in the 1980's. Ministry are the spring from which NIN flows. In my opinion, Nine Inch Nails wouldn't exist if Ministry hadn't done it first.

Yeah for liking them. Not a huge fan, but I like what I've heard.
Nah for being on Prog Archives. They don't come across as progressive to me at all.

I am a big NIN fan but do not believe they belong on this site. I think their inclusion is another piece of evidence that crossover-prog and prog-related are Trojan horses for non-prog acts the admin are fond of, though not exclusively, there are numerous genuine crossover-prog and prog-related category acts.

Thanks Raff, now I can review one of my all time favorite prog albums, The Fragile. I disagree with those who think it doesn't belong on this site, in my opinion progarchives is too exclusivist as it is, and I'll support most steps to include a greater diversity of material on this site, and especially NIN, one of the most genuinely progressive bands I've ever come across.

Actually five out of five of us on the Crossover team voted yes and it was cleared by a sufficient number of admins. Also, Prog Related is not prog. You can ignore the addition if it bothers you. |

Of course he's free to express his opinion that it doesn't belong, but as only one team member in Crossover is an admin, I think the assertion is very wrong if I understand what's being implied. The admins are very strict about what gets let into Prog Related as it has very strict criteria, so I think there may be a tendency with some team members, not thinking of Crossover particularly (at least I know there is with me) to accept bands that had Prog Related been more open I would have been more likely to suggest it for PR (I have a little more latitude because of that and might vote yes on something for Eclectic that I lean towards prog-related for because I know that getting a band into Prog Related is so very difficult). It's very true that people have different parameters when it comes to what is acceptable. I would have sooner expected to see The Flaming Lips approved for Crossover than Nine Inch Nails, but part of that is informed by my biases. It's quite something that all of the Crossover people felt that NIN fit that category, and with any team, there is commonly diversity of opinion, so to have it approved by all says something. I trust that the teams want to do best for their categories. I don't always agree with decisions, but it's what's left out that is more of a concern to me than what's let in (mind you, I'm quite inclusive, especially when it comes to allowing in bands that I don't have to vote on myself. ![]() While a team must ask for admin approval when it comes to a band deemed controversial, the teams are independent, and members vote as they think fit - the admins don't tell team members what they should allow in, that would kill people's willingness to work for teams, and I don't think that they'd want to anyway. If PR, and Prog-Related was manages by me, it would operate under very different parameters, but it's not. My tastes would play a factor too -- you'd find far fewer AOR-type bands being allowed in, and many more experimental and obscure ones, and ones with much less relation to rock music. You'd find big names such as Morricone in, Laurie Anderson would be in, and a great many smaller names. People such as Stockhausen and Xenakis would find a place in PA if this were my site. |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.
