- After the Ordeal
That's really all I need of Genesis. Most of their stuff strikes me as good, not great great, not amazing.

in short:
1. Supper's Ready One of the top all-time prog epics--excellently arranged, strong, emotional theme, but with interesting free-association type stuff. 2. The Fountain of Salmacis. Excellent symphonic-prog arrangement, hard-rocking yet with a air of aloof classicalness. 3. Cinema Show Beautiful somewhat dreamy theme/arrangement with superb extended keyboard solo. 4. The Knife Powerful anti-war song with strong driving rhythm and other superb sound mix/vocal touches. 5. Los Endos. A finale (?) of themes on TOTT. A little too short though, wish it would continue.

This Is A tough Task: I'm only 17 but I've been listening to Genesis for most of my life, something which you can credit my father for. I could make a Top 50 list and barely scratch the surface.
That being said...
1. The Musical box 2. Supper's Ready 3. Duke's Travels 4. Home By The Sea/SHBTS 5. Deep In the Motherlode/Land Of Confusion 6.Firth Of Fifth 7. In The Cage 8. Man On The Corner/Mama 9. Duchess 10. Eleventh Earl Of Mar/Keep It Dark/Driving The Last Spike
I Know I'm Kinda cheating with the ties, but I can't help it.

Supernatural Anaesthetist
White Mountain / Fly on a Windshield / The Knife / Harlequin / Horizons / Dancing with the Moonlit Knight / Entangled..
-I can't decide on the last one.
I liked the group its ability to set a mood and tell stories.
I like how their playing was always subordinated to the mood and direction of a piece, yet never sacrificed.
I like how the arrangements moved and shifted about and often ended up in a different place from where they started.
I like Steve Hackett's guitar playing.
I liked Peter Gabriel's voice.
Some of Genesis' contributions to Prog were:
Lyrical and instrumental storytelling
Dynamic contrast
Texture with 12 strings
Ambiguity of instrument timbre - guitars that sounded like keyboards, keyboards that sounded like guitars
Playing innovations - two handed tapping, unusual chords often with unusual tunings, strange sounds in general, ...

1. The Musical Box 2. The Knife 3. The Return Of The Giant Hogweed 4. Blood On The Rooftops 5. Watcher Of The Skies
Maybe it's due to Genesis Live being my first album by them, and my only one for the longest time that those songs resonate strongest with me even now. W&W was my second, hence my love for BOTR. My fav album of theirs for the longest time was Lamb, but I always enjoyed listening to it as a whole, so the individual tracks didn't stand out so much even though a lot of them are great.

My fave five:
1. The Musical Box 2. Firth of Fifth 3. Can-Utility & The Coastliners 4. Carpet Crawlers 5. Stagnation
For some reason, it took me years to appreciate 'Can-Utility' as one of their finest moments.

The Cinema Show
The Musical Box
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Back In NYC
Carpet Crawlers
Here Comes The Supernatural Anesthetist
Squonk
Time Table
Supper's Ready
Watcher Of The Skies
The thing I dig about Genesis, other than the songwriting and craftsmanship, is their theatrical yet studious approach to the tunes. And in the beginning they sat down to play, and the lead singer sat behind a bass drum.
What attracts me to art rock/prog pop is that "other thing". The music is being performed and can be heard and experienced, but there is also something palpable, some other thing that I can't quite grab ahold of or describe, but it is there in and around and next to the music nonetheless.

Okay, this was really hard to do. The ranking between those ten is pretty much gut feeling and could change at a whim, and I still don't feel good about leaving out certain songs like "Squonk", "The Musical Box", "The Lamia" and "Home by the Sea". But anyway:
1. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight 2. Blood on the Rooftops 3. Mama 4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 5. Cuckoo Cocoon 6. The Fountain of Salmacis 7. Behind the Lines 8. Dodo/Lurker 9. Watcher of the Skies 10. Turn It On Again

Oh man, I just listened to Can-Utility and the Coastliners twice, it had been quite a while, and that tune packs a serious punch. It's got just about everything I'm lookin' for in a tune, great lyrics, some different and interesting movements, and a beautiful jam section that builds into a cool finale.
This forum has already paid dividends in my musical world. Thanks. Oh and, this tune has now moved into my Top 10 from Genesis.

here goes...
1) The Fountain of Salmacis 2) The Lamia 3) Blood on the Rooftops 4) The Colony of Slippermen 5) Mad Man Moon 6) The Battle of Epping Forest 7) Visions of Angels 8) Can-Utility and the Coastliners 9) Inside and Out 10) Me and Sarah Jane
5 things that makes Genesis great:
1) The songwriting and arrangements were top notch 2) Tony Banks' lead synthesizer solos 3) Peter Gabriels' lyrics and theatricality 4) Steve Hacketts' aggressive electric guitar approach 5) They created The Lamb Lies Down...IMHO the greatest concept album ever!
