I'm not such a techno-triumphalist that I believe that the free and open internet will solve all our socio-economic problems. But I am enough of a techno-pessimist to believe that baking surveillance, control and censorship into the very fabric of our networks, devices and laws is the absolute road to dictatorial hell.

The problem is that we only think of something as "out of tune" because of our exposure to Western music. It's not really innate. Lots of Eastern music is fiercely dissonant from a Western perspective.

Sounds logical to me!

Except in this case the argument is solely about Western music, and what 'well-tempered' has represented over the centuries.  I knew the tritone had been previously regarded as evil, but didn't realize that had happened to the third as well.

Regardless, no big deal, but I thought it was an interesting read.

I thought it was interesting too, I'm just saying that there's no such thing as the "right" tuning. ;-)

I read it and lost interest in the article before I finished it.  Got my start messing around on poorly tuned beat up guitar.  Dabbled in lessons here and there, this method and that.  For me it's get the tuning reasonably close and then just have fun playing.

I knew most of that already, but it was still a cool article. Personally, I think microtuning will be the wave of the future. I am getting pretty sick of the same twelve notes over and over again. I wish a quarter tone rock band would form. Maybe I'll have to start my own.... except that I don't know how to play any instruments that can do quarter tones.

Nobody's tossing out regulations, don't be so melodramatic. The UK doesn't require the acoustic shut off switches either, and it's not even clear that they would work because they've never been used before in a catastrophic failure like this one.

Like it or not, we need a lot of energy to run our country and things like solar and wind are still a long way off from being good enough to supply our needs. Our options are therefore:

1) Drill, baby, drill
2) Continue to pump tons of money into countries that are actively trying to destroy us
3) Go to war with those countries and just take their oil
4) Build nuclear power plants

I doubt you are too thrilled about any of those (I vote for option four) but that's the reality of the world.
