Well we have the new Timberlake album now.  I've heard the first few tracks and it's not too bad.  The production is a bit "safe", in that it has the same veneer as a hundred other current pop albums, so I was a little disappointed in that after hearing the warm live sound on SNL.  The songs are okay.  The first track kinda sounded like Stevie Wonder.

If he gets added to PA, I'll submit a whole review. LOL

I didn't like Mirrors. The rest of the album wasn't too bad, though. Not amazing, but not bad either.

Never thought Justin Timberlake would be discussed during several pages on a prog forum.

Never thought a discussion on a prog forum would make me want to check Justin Timberlake out x_x

"In Time".

I stand corrected! "In Time" was kind of interesting. It held my interest. I saw it recently for the first time and thought it was a great story idea.

^ I actually agree ... even though I fail to see the depth of it (if it has any at all).

Since when has prog been the only genre with long songs. Timberlake is closer to minimal electronic (techno, trance etc.). Besides that, r&b has had "jams" for ages already.

Krautrock is progressive due to its influence from minimalist classical. If you can't tell the difference between that and minimal electronic/hip hop influence, clean your ears out.

Actually we must open a topic like this: ''What 100.000 things are way better than Justin Bieber?''

Another current R&B singer, Frank Ocean is putting prog elements in his music too. I heard my little brother listening to this the other day.

Start listening to the embedded video below at 4:25 or click here to be taken to that part

I quite like Ocean's first two albums. He's a fantastic lyricist, and that separates him from just everyone else in r&b. Have a listen to "Super Rich Kids" and read the lyrics at the same time. He's just a brilliant lyricist. I love "Novacane" too. Sometimes his voice reminds me of Otis Redding (e.g. "Bad Religion"), sometimes of Stevie Wonder (Super Rich Kids) (though he's not really like either...)  One gets the strong sense that's he's only getting better, and hasn't nearly reached his potential. I can put "Pink Matter" on a loop and listen to it for an hour. 'Can't wait for his next album. "Wiseman," that track he did for Tarantino's Django Unchained film, is brilliant too; almost Ennio Morricone-esque. Tarantino's a fool for rejecting it.

Funny I found this post by accident after an experience I had last night:  I was riding with one of my co-workers (who's into Tool and Dream Theater), when he popped in a CD of what sounded at first like modern R and B.  Soon it morphed into something more interesting, with unusual instrumentation, vocal effects, polyrhythms, and sound effects.  It turned one of the lines of the song into a kind of mantra and went from R and B to something like space rock.  I joked with my co-worker that this was progressive R and B, and to my surprise he said it was Justin Timberlake's new album.  Then today I found this topic.....Confused

I don't think it's Prog, but I do respect Timberlake for (re)pushing the boundaries of mainstream pop beyond the still-standard 3-4 minute barrier.

I thought he sounds a bit progressive compared to other pop musicians.  I thought the song "Mirrors" was kind of prog-ish.  He's one of the few pop acts I like
