Hey Michael what do you think of this album? I've had it for years but actually never given it the proper attention. I vaguely remember it is more hard rocking than the usual symphonic style, maybe a bit like Osage Tribe??

Bwahaha, you know, I was literally just tinkering away on a review for it right this very second, my friend! I had already mentioned Osage Tribe and more of a hard-rocking sound (as well as comparisons to Garybaldi and parts of Osanna, would you agree?). A few weeks back I bought the latest mini LP of it sound-unheard, and while I kind of like it, I also find it find it hugely unengaging in many ways, does that make sense? I jokingly call these sort of albums `guitar porn'! Funny, I always had the thought in the back of my mind `Hmmm, I bet this is an album that Sagi really digs!'

Oh, man, got me wanting to give this a new listen, Sam! I still dismiss it a little because of my obsession with the previous album, but I'll give it a fresh spin very shortly. I definitely remember it was good, just not `D' good for me! |
It didn't seem that good before, but it really hit me this time. It's really different from D, it has a relaxing/meditative vibe that reminds of Popol Vuh

I Teoremi - S/T (Mike I can't say I like this album too much, it's certainly not bad and there are a few great moments here and there but overall it's just ok, not very interesting and definitely not an essential. Osage Tribe's sole album is much more interesting and with better playing imo)
Tatran - Shvat Solaris - MC II Manna/Mirage - Blue Dogs The Box - D'Apres Le Horla De Maupassant Jaga Jazzist - One Armed Bandit Recreation - Music Or Not Music Alice In Chains - Facelift

Stabbed in Back - DasvidaniyaIgor Wakhevitch - Docteur Faust (This album is so strange ) Arachnoid - s/t Blues Pills - s/t Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets (I think this album is much better (and trippier) than the debut, the title track alone is better than any of the debut's tracks. It feels like TD continued the last part of that track I wonder how the music world would be if PF hadn't signed with a major label.)

Oh man, I couldn’t agree with you there at all, Sam! It may sound of its time, but `Piper’ is iconic, one of the best all-time psychedelic albums, one that sounds like no other before or since. I don’t rate `Saucerful’ much higher than the `Relics’ compilation, because that’s what `Saucerful’ sounds like – a compilation of scattered tracks. It’s a cool psychedelic album, no doubt, but I think the studio versions of `Set the Controls’ and (especially) `Saucerful’ are very weak in comparison to the versions on the `Ummagumma’ live album, not to mention the ones found on the endless bootlegs we’re not meant to listen to! They sound like practice versions, way too embryonic, and `Saucerful’ in particular sounds kind of taped together, the transitions between the differentr passages are not as smooth. `Let There Be More Light’ is a terrific opener, `Remember A Day’ is cool, `See-Saw’ is pretty but kind of dull, but `Corporal Clegg’, while fun, is dogsh*t, and `Jugband Blues’ doesn’t fit on the album at all. By the way, would you have heard the almost `pre-Piper’ Floyd album `Tonight Let’s All Make Love in London’, which has two lengthy Floyd instrumental improvisations, including a blistering take on `Interstellar Overdrive’? Simply amazing! But man, that Arachnoid album – total f*cking classic!! I’m quite intimidated at the idea of writing a review for it. Man, the Mellotron alone is terrifying!!

Sure, Piper is a unique album, I'm just generally not into Syd's music (hence my hate for his solo albums). Which live version from Ummagumma (or Pompeii) isn't better than the studio version? I really like the studio version of Saucerful though, I think it has a different atmosphere because it's more minimalistic and I think the strange transitions are cool... it probably inspired Faust, now that I think of it Yeah, Corporal Clegg and Jugband Blues are the weekest tracks, the later sounds like a B-side of their debut. The kazoo solo on Clegg is quite original though "See-saw" is great though, in my opinion, it has a nice Mellotronic dreamy mood... I went to bed with that track playing in my head and fell asleep easily Ummagumma is the only studio album I don't have between Piper and Animals (and TDB is the only album I have after that), I should really get that one.
Never heard of it but sounds interesting
I know it was an intimidating first listen Still not nearly as odd as the album I heard before though
