No order of course, but the 2013 line up of Genesis songs would look like this.
10) Watcher of the Skies. (love that warm mellotron sound.) 9) Mama.(an electronic drum sound that really agrees with me.) 8) The 11th earl of Mar. (incredibly catchy chorus and terrific drumming.) 7) Cinema Show. ( Tony Banks is a wizard on keys in this one) 6) In The Cage. (thee most incredible Lyrics of any Genesis song right now for me.) 7) Dukes Travels ( terrific Instrumental. One of their best.) 8) Suppers Ready--The live version off 2nd's out/phill Collins( Genesis put together their greatest live performance of this song of all time. Nothing beats it, especially the remastered version by Nick Davis.) 9) Squonk. ( flat out. This song sounds amazing from start to end. Very balanced tune with some heavy lyric content.) 10) Domino--Live over Europe version in 2007. ( Chester's drums really bring this song to life when the Domino starts to Role. Meaning when the song picks up fast mid way through. ;)
Those choices I'd be comfortable with. As we all know here though, Genesis have an incredible catalog of songs to choose from. I think by next month my list could look a lot different due to all the wonderful things their are to appreciate in Genesis's large-spanning career. ;)

1. "Supper's Ready" Hard to go against it. In this musical journey/exploration that's made up much of my life, I haven't found a greater song.
2. "The Musical Box" No transitions, but I love the massive dynamics and the feel. I even wish it was longer. I LOVE its ideas (musical)
3. "Firth of Fifth" My introduction to Genesis. The performances on here are all fantastic. Tony Banks is.. wait for it....... key.
4. "The Cinema Show" I love the transitions. It's got a magical feel, and then the 7/8 section is fantastic.
5. "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" Dramatic. Many unique aspects plus excellent lyrics. Revolutionary Symphonic Prog, as are pretty much all these tunes are.
Not very in-depth explanations, but I'll leave that to reviews on their albums later. Just joined the forum!
"We have grown, but there is still much to be done. Many that live in darkness that must be shown the way, for it is the dawning of a new day."
Why have 5 (or 10) songs when you could have 20 (or more!).
Anyway, I don't think I have an exact order really, though I'll give it a go.
1. Entangled 2. Burning Rope 3. Here Comes The Supernatural Anaesthetist 4. The Carpet Crawlers 5. Undertow 6. The Lady Lies 7. Deep In The Motherlode 8. Squonk 9. Cuckoo Cocoon 10. Scenes From A Night's Dream/Robbery, Assault and Battery/Ripples
Overall, "...And Then There Were Three" is one of my favorite albums of all time.
I also really like "Silent Sorrow In Empty Boats".

Oh Genesis! My favorite progband!
1/Watcher of the sky (this song is a big dream where I want to stay all my life! An incredible end!)
2/Supper's ready (...And it's "hello babe, with your guardian eyes so blue. Hey my baby - don't you know our love is true.", when I heard this sentence I feel amative!)
3/Dancing with the moonlight knight (it's for me a small super's ready)
4/One for the vine (with its large softness, this song is unforgetable!)
5/The knife ("Some of you are going to die, Martyrs of course to the freedom that I shall provide." A great final!)
6/Firth of fith (Legendary piano intro and guitar solo!)
7/The musical box (steve hacket and peter gabriel sing and play like gods)
8/Dance on a volcano (a very interesting experimantal song)
9/Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats (rocked by this quiet song )
10/Looking for someone (first real song and first real masterpiece!)
1/All the songs writen by Peter Gabriel are brilliant!
2/Genesis had the spirit of experimentation but never lost the melody and suceeded to install a coexistance between rythms and melodies.
3/The singer and the musicians are excellent!
4/Lyrics are intelligent and poetic!
5/All the covers of Genesis are so beautiful!
Did Genesis do something for Rock n roll? Yes! No one on this topic said it: Steve Hacket played with tapping before Van Halen!
Sorry if it's difficult to understand my sentences but I am 15 years old and french, I try to speak correctly english but it isn't evident....

Like a lot of people have said on this thread, your favourite songs change considerably over the weeks and months, but my first five are always the same (have been for years), and the latter five are from six to ten in the last few weeks, but are likely to change in the future.
It's almost impossible to restrict my list to 30 songs, let alone 5. I guess I'll go with my instinctive first 10 favorites that come to mind (in no particular order):
- Cinema Show - One for the Vine - Mad Man Moon - Cul de Sac - Can Utility and the Coastliners - Domino (yes) - It's gonna get better (yes, again) - Musical Box - Burning Rope - Afterglow
Favorite album: A trick of the tail. Fantastic from start to finish.

Very true, but check out self taught guitarist Dr Vittorio Camardese in 1965...the fun starts at 1:30 in
I knew that Steve Hacket didn't invent it :) but I want to say that he was among the firsts
Thank's for your video, I was impressed!
Ya, isn't that amazing? And on an acoustic guitar no less! Actually the guy in the video reminded me most of Stanley Jordan, the jazzer who did a similar style of 2 handed tapping and became popular in the early/mid 80's. Their style is really to use tapping in a chordal way. As far as electric guitarists tapping a solo goes, I think the earliest one I'm aware of is Jimi Hendrix in 1968. I was shocked the 1st time I heard "Hey Joe" from the Live at Winterland CD...the intro is this free form kind of buildup and he's clearly tapping his brains out. I guess it's really not surprising though as he was such an out-of-the-box kind of player.
