But by a diminishing number of hardened devotees who had already worked out that KC were never going to release an album devoid of controversy... Ermm

I remember a long time ago (the summer of 1995 to be exact) when I worked in a warehouse there was a guy I worked with who said the same thing. He thought those 80s albums sounded too much like the Talking Heads.

And I can imagine, Discipline is still not the best cup of tea for not so few of those most into classic Prog, including myself. Big smile

Anyway, my thanks to you, Lewian, for good bringing of more understanding of the topic by not least your statistical definition.

(1) (Like Dream Theaters more controversial albums:) Albums of which a group of people thinks that they are not risk-taking enough, boring, or selling out by trying to please a bigger crowd, and

(2) (Like Trout Mask Replica:) Albums that are hard to access and alienate many while enthusing some?

The reasons for your (2) seem to me quite obvious, while concerning (1), they may be rather complex.

while most people have not heard it, not even heard of it, "Fairy Tales" by Mother Gong is pretty divisive. some (like me) find it to be an absolutely brilliant 5-star album, some hate how Gilli Smyth tells her fairy tales (though they may even like the music)

although 60% of the 51 reviews on PA are for 3 or 4 stars, with only 6% giving it 1 star, suggesting it's not actually that divisive?

6% of 51 is 3 of 51 giving it 1 star. 22% gave it 5 stars. but as I said, what is divisive is mostly the vocals; the instrumentals are usually liked a lot.

this album is the favorite album of Friede and me, for personal reasons. our kids Alice and Dorothy absolutely loved it when they were kids and listened to it again and again and again

It's funny, I still quite enjoy both BtB and JB; when I play the albums, I never fast forward and have never hated them. You're right, there is most definitely a place for humour in prog, which most of us enjoy and celebrate... is there anyone here who doesn't like 'The Battle Of Epping Forest?' I love it.

I think many of us however will be able to point to at least one 'humorous' track which we find a bit too much and skip past? One for me would certainly be Hawkwind's 'Flying Doctor' which I'll be honest I'd be happy not to have to hear again.... LOL

It's lovely to read that an album gives you both such warm memories; that's what music should be about, especially when you are young. I might have to give it a listen!  Smile

Speaking of King Crimson, 'The Power to Believe' I was in a King Crimson mood, so I put this one on since I've really only listened to once, and I was surprised at how much I liked it now. People on PA think it's good, not RYM people. I think it's a solid end to one of the best studio careers, and quite a good album.

Hard to believe their last studio album was 20 years ago. I wish they'd produced a studio album of the new material they've been performing live for the last few years. I'm probably going to end up picking up various live albums to close out all that material.

Come on, one more King Crimson album, one that they can say 'this is it, we're done' an epitaph, if they do, let's hope it's amazing, (which of course it will be)

Which of course, begs the question, would it be good?

Me too Jared, but there are quite a few people who don't - I've seen it given many a bashing over the years. Talking of humorous ELP songs, the same goes for Are You Ready Eddy?, which I really like.

Islands by King Crimson takes a beating from a good percentage of Prog fans.. 😃 I love that album to death, but it would be completely ignorant and illogical to not understand or accept that a lot of Prog fans disliked it. I love the album, but it's so ridiculously obvious as to why a lot of people don't.

It's a very personal album to me and I would never have expectations for another person liking it.

In the 70s...I recorded it direct from LP on to a blank Maxell cassette tape. I took a battery operated boom box and set it up on the beach ..just before sundown with only a few people on the beach relaxing.

I would listen to Islands in front of the ocean. The music on Islands seemed to reveal itself more in those surroundings. Of course I was high smoking a joint..however listening to the album while NOT under the influence would be just as good.

The album seemed to create the vibe of life at sea . The peacefulness and beauty of it enchantment lured me in beginning with the mysterious
FORMENTARA LADY to THE SAILOR'S TALE which created fear of the ocean's life-force.

Although I experienced trauma when I was dragged across the ocean floor during a severe storm and surfaced making it to land and my friend slid across ice on the deck of a fishing boat and plunged to his death in freezing waters ...here I was smoking weed on the beach and listening to Islands.

The album intrigued me no doubt...but in a case where a person didn't have these scary experiences at sea..Islands still proves to be affective without that trauma and has a dreamy or ethereal vibe somehow and by physically visiting the beach to hear it is telling. Of course I totally understand why a lot of people find it boring

Actually, I recall it being enthusiastically embraced by longtime KC fans and many new ones!  It certainly had a great deal of energy and a new sound.

Back in those years, I used to meet up with Fripp after shows (starting with his record store Frippertronics tour), and I enjoyed speaking with him about his evolving music.  We started after "League of Gentlemen," I miss those brief chats!

After the Discipline show at Chicago's Park West, I was speaking with Bob about their use of the new Roland guitar synth.  I commented on what a "strong" instrument it was (paraphrasing a term Fripp has used for instrumentation), and he nodded/smiled approvingly.  He told me "this is the best touring band in rock music right now" and I agreed.

I came to say this. An excellent album, except for the poem.

I also feel that, despite not being their best album, Closure/Continuation by Porcupine Tree has been too criticized for its quality.

Another recent divisive album is Epigone by Wilderun, my favorite album of 2022, and one of my favorite metal albums, has a score of 3.54 in this website.

A couple weeks ago, I said to myself, Wouldn't it be funny If I got the songs from TFTO to be my top 4 songs on spotify? Well, this took a LOT of listening to this album. All I wanted was this screenshot, I'm happy now Smile
