Actually, there is nothing about Portnoy joining Avenged SevenFold...

I don't mind. Hopefully it will bring some fresh blood to an old, repetitive DT. Betcha he would have left earlier if not for the tiresome "AA Saga" not having been completed.

Nope...no sarcasm at all, I meant every word of it. Music means a lot to people......When I was a teenager, hell it was all I did (no computers, video games were Pong, no cell phones, cable TV...) music was all we had to take up most of our freetime....of course when I was not playing baseball....My music Forum was buying all the music mags and reading them from cover to cover over and over.....that's where we got our news from.

This is big stuff for a lot of people......(zero sarcasm).

Oh, my bad. I was referring to chopper, not you. I should have clarified that. Embarrassed

WOW! This upsets me. It could produce a new musical direction for the band, but Portnoy is irreplaceable as far as technicality goes.

The last DT album that really liked was SDOIT so maybe it will be better now, but who could replace him, really?

Unexpected bad news. I'm no die hard DT fan, but for those who are this must be a very unwelcome surprise.

They're all great musicians, but Portnoy was such a high profile member - and a fantastic drummer - he'll be difficult to replace. I hope they do find someone to fill those big shoes, and carry on.

I couldn't believe it when I heard this horrible news. I'm truly gutted, there have been tears today Cry

I just wish the band could have come to some compromise - MP clearly didn't want to leave and just wanted a break - I can't believe they could let him go!!

I'm so grateful that I got to see DT in concert twice last year - I'll never forget those amazing shows.

I hope it turns out to be a temporary thing and he rejoins in the future. Dream Theater just won't be the same without Mike Portnoy Cry

if by survived you meant 'keep on doing music but dropping incredibly in quality' then i guess you are right...

I would be tempt to say yes but I should say nat as much in quality as in creativity...

for Genesis, quality was there but it was awful for our ears

Here is the official statement from the band (haven't seen it posted here yet, unless I missed it somehow):

“To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness — regret — we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike’s stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.

While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other ventures and challenges, we can assure you that Dream Theater will continue to move forward with the same intensity — and in the same musical tradition — that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us. Fans and friends: File this episode under Black Clouds and Silver Linings. As planned, we begin recording our newest album in January 2011, and we’ll follow that with a full-on world tour. “The Spirit Carries On.”

All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey. We have had a long and meaningful career together. It is our true hope that he finds all he is looking for, and that he achieves the happiness he deserves. He will be missed.”

Doesn't sound like they are going to be changing direction musically, unfortunately.

nevertheless, all cjhanges are good for the evolution of musics in general - Mike will surely find some new great musicians and Dream Theater won't be as predictable as they were since Train of Thoughts

Lets hope fans will give the new drummer a chance - when Jordan Rudess came to Dream Theater, I read lots of bad comments but Jordan had given a lots to the musical evolution of the band

Lets give them a chance !!

Yes I was being (slightly) sarcastic about Genesis and Yes but there are things in this world more deserving of tears than a drummer leaving a prog-metal band who are largely unknown to the general public. Just look at the thread currently near this one about the death of an ex-member of ELO for instance.

Considering I wasn't alive for the death of John Lennon, the departure of Peter Gabriel, and many other sad moments of music, they don't have as much of an effect on me. Did you ever perhaps consider that?
