For me, it is one of those - today, if i had to pick one it would be Silent Corner.

I listened to it for the first time yesterday. Might become a favourite over time but its too early to say just yet.

For now King Crimson - Red. That is my favourite guitar based prog album by far.

ELP probably released their best album this year (Welcome Back My Friends) but that's a live album and presumably doesn't count.

Gentle Giant - Power and The Glory ,would be my second choice studio album wise.

Relayer and Lamb are a bit overrated  while Refugee and Kayak II are a couple of hugely underrated albums although all would probably feature in my top ten for the year.

I'll go for Hamburger Concerto by Focus ahead of Red, Relayer, Refugee, Sheer Heart Attack and Crime of the Century, plus Burn by Deep Purple if that counts. Always had a soft spot for Greenslade's Spyglass Guest and Argent's Nexus as well.

This list comes quite close to what would be my top 10 of that year:

1. Magma - Köhntarkösz
2. Carmen - Dancing on a Cold Wind
3. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards
4. Gong - You
5. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
6. Focus - Hamburger Concerto
7. Yes - Relayer
8. Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
9. Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory
X. Supertramp - Crime of the Century

Make it +1.5. I always thought that Illusions on a Double Dimple was released in 1973. It is also listed on PA as a 1973 album, but the Wiki entry and allmusic.com mention 1974 as release year. The album was recorded between June and October 1973 according to these sites.

If this album belongs to 1974 it should be in my top three:
Quote
1. Magma - Köhntarkösz
2. Carmen - Dancing on a Cold Wind
3. Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple
4. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards
5. Gong - You
6. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
7. Focus - Hamburger Concerto
8. Yes - Relayer
9. Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
X. Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory

Agreed

In fact, anyone who doesn't have this album in their top 10 for 1974 invalidates themselves and renders their opinions on anything and everything worthless.

Hero & Heroine is a great album indeed, but the opener overshadows everything that follows imo.

I can't chose. It's between these (+ the ones I forgot)

Gong - You
Yatha Sidhra - A Meditation Mass
PFM - L'Isola di Niente
Area - Caution Radiation Area
Genesis - The Lamb
Miles Davis - Big Fun
King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black
Franco Battiato - Clic
Harmonia - Musik Von
Bennie Maupin - Jewel In The Lotus
Delirium - lll
Taj Mahal Travellers - August 1974
Faust - IV

All great choices (especially the Gong "You" album....does my head right every time).

A list of great LPs from 1974:

Carla Bley - Tropic Appetites
Jack Bruce - Out of the Storm (the great Steve "Deacon" Hunter on guitar....man, I miss Jack already)
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
Isotope - Isotope (IMO their best)
Nucleus - Under the Sun
Traffic - Where the Eagle Flies
Oregeon - Winter Light
Cosmic Jokers - Cosmic Jokers
Gryphon - Midnight Mushrumps and Queen to Knight Three (two classics in one year!)
Manfred Mann Earth Band - the Good Earth ("Gimme the good earth to lay my head on"....by far my favorite MMEB LP)
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Interestingly, enough, it seems as though 1974 brought some of my least favorite albums from our prog heroes.  I'm not a big fan of Relayer, Lamb, You, or Rock Bottom.  Sheer Heart Attack and Crime of the Century are both good, but neither band is overly proggy.  Interestingly enough, it might be one of the few times where King Crimson is at the top of my list as Red and Starless are both sublime releases.

The Strawbs, Gentle Giant, and Focus releases are all good, but I can't really say that I am personally overly familiar with them.

I show Triumvirat as a 1973 release too.

Other mentions Hawkwind's Hall of the Mountain Grill, Henry Cow's Unrest, and Hoslips' The Tain.

And there it is.  The album that tops Relayer.  Thank you Scott.

I forget these things mostly because I have no idea what year albums were released.

A brilliant album but released in 1973. They did the not so great Dancehall Sweethearts in 74.

So it is.  I was scrolling through my iTunes list and it came up as 1973.  Now fixed in my iTunes listing.  Thanks.

According to the official, authorised bio on Triumvirat on their official website, Illusions is a '74 release. I researched it further, and it was in March of that year. Even later in the year west of the Atlantic. Also, the liner notes used in the EMI 2002 remastered edition of the album mentions March of 1974 as a date for initial release in Europe.

Broadening out a bit, tn terms of non-prog offerings, I would have to rank "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" by Little Feat as also high on my list of great albums released in 1974.
