Hi everyone.

Given my mood lately, I thought I could use some dark and gloomy music. I've listened to a lot of VdGG, but I struggle to find other bands with such a convoluted and "serious" sound. I would like to ask you some suggestions for what I like to call "dark prog". I don't mind heavy music.
Here's what I've been listening to recently:

  • "Red"-era King Crimson

  • maudlin of the Well

  • Devin Townsend
  • The Gathering
  • A Silver Mt. Zion

Welcome to PA!  I like the dark stuff too.

A couple of Italian bands come to mind, based on your list.  You're from Italy, maybe you know them already.  Devil Doll (80s) is very dramatic and dark, with a vocalist who likes to sound like Gollum from time to time.  Jacula (early 70s) is an interesting pipe organ-based fusion of dark church music and occasional metallic guitars, with a charismatic female vocalist.

On the more metallic side, if you don't mind things getting a bit weird, try early Harvey Milk (especially Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men) - slow, tortuous, and very experimental metal.  Slightly more accessible is Boris, who aren't on PA as a prog band but they're close enough to recommend here.  They really run the gamut stylistically, but their earliest drone-metal efforts are very dark indeed.

I also highly recommend Univers Zero's Heresie album if you haven't heard it already.

Wow, that was a quick reply! I'm definitely going to check these bands out. Univers Zero is good indeed, I've only listened to their first album so far, so I'm sure I'll like Heresie too.

Steven Wilson's debut solo album (Insurgentes) is considerably darker than anything he did with Porcupine Tree imo so I would put that forward also.

That's good to know, as I think that the Porcupine Tree albums I heard (Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun) lacked that dark and heavy edge I looked for (I've heard some of Fear of a Blank Planet though, and that's another story).

Well, that sounds both reassuring and creepy. I'm going to check 'em out as soon as I can.

In the meantime I listened to the first album by Devil Doll and it's been a blast! I had never bothered with italian bands, but it turns out it's been my loss all this time Shocked

Besides the bands suggested by the previous posters (all excellent choices), I'd mention two of the bands I saw at the Orion Studios on November 8: Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores and Discipline. The former hail from Providence, HP Lovecraft's hometown - you can't get any darker than thatSmile! Discipline, on the other hand, even though not as Avant-leaning in musical terms, are very dark lyrically, and very intense both on CD and on stage.

As you'd expect, there's a lot under metal thats dark (but not as much as some would like to believe, there's a difference between dark and heavy).

Anathema- The Silent Enigma
Opeth- Blackwater Park
Wolves in the Throne Room- Celestial Lineage
Marillion- any of the first 4 albums
In the Woods... Strange in Stereo

Oh yeah I forgot that thing existed, that's a good one! although they kinda lose me at the 'gastric juices' bit

A big yay for Discipline, Anathema and Marillion (although I've only heard 2 albums by them)! Speaking about Opeth, instead, I have to admit that I don't like them. I've listened to their first 4 albums some time ago but they didn't clicked with me for whatever reason. All the other bands I'll have to check out.

Be careful with Anathema as they 'found the light' on their last 3 albums. A Fine Day To Exit and Judgement of the older albums are worth checking out though.
