Topic: Rnd 1 Rome Bracket: Hawkwind v. Magma Posted: December 07 2014 at 08:57
What God decreed this matchup.. however the God of D&D dice called for it so we must deliver
From the S/R-Psych Conference. .one of the THE defining bands of the entire sub-genre. The band against which all spacey, psychedelic prog bands are measured. As well as owner of the greatest live prog album ever made.
From England
HAWKWIND!!
From the Zeuhl Conference we have a band who didn't just define a sub-genre they created one and are one of a handful of THE most unique bands not just in prog.. but all of music.
From France
MAGMA!!!
Vegas oddsmakers have this listed as a tossup.

I'm going to go have a think about this one, loved Hawkwind for a long long time with several all time classic album. Magma are a much more recent discovery for me and I like a lot of there stuff a lot. I'll be back later.
Space Ritual vs MDK Quark, Strangeness & Charm vs KA Levitation vs ER Warrior On The Edge Of Time vs Kohntarkosz
Tough call

I know this will be a close race but their is no contest for me. Just like when they were the headliners at NEARfest. Hawkwind pretty much bores me and Magma is mesmerizing.

Though I do like some of Hawkwind's music (especially the albums they released when Simon House was on board), they never grabbed me the way Magma did. Vander's merry crew all the way!

Magma are truly unique and visionary. Still, I prefer the space metal hawklords.

Jeez... tough call.
Classics like Space Ritual, Levitation and Hall of the Mountain Grill are highlights in a very varied discography. Stacia certainly made them a unique live show and they are often cited as a highly influential band.
I just can't deny how incredible a band Magma is though. They came out of left field playing their own brand of mutant jazz and continue to do so 30 years on without compromise (spare the incredibly strange "Merci" that I can't help but have a soft spot for)

I enjoyed both bands live in the early seventies. Hawkwind made some classic albums then but failed to maintain my interest in the ensuing decades. My vote has to go to one of the two all-time great innovative bands that still inspire to this day - MAGMA.
