Very unique black metal that's almost psychedelic in the way the dark ambient influences are incorporated, but in a nightmarish esoteric way that also has something crude and folkloric about it.

I only discovered the band about a year ago, and I swallowed up all seven of their albums in a very short period of time, and generally loved them all pretty equally -- except for this one. Not that I don't like it, but it really does sound like a completely different band to me. So I like it, but not on "Liars" terms, if you catch my drift. One writer pointed out that their album-to-album development has progressed in pairs. Usually a completely radical change in direction followed by a consolidation of that style, followed by another radical change in direction, and so on. Albums (2,3) , (4,5), and (6,7) all follow this pattern, but once again, (1) is the oddball entry that has no partner. Guess it's foolish to complain about this album for that reason, because it's really a pretty hot little album on its own merits. Though while I'm pointing out flaws, I have to say having the album close on a 20+ minute loop that's almost as long as the rest of the album combined is a bit of an odd way to go, and not really a fulfilling listen for me.

Not prog, but some of the catchiest, funniest music I've heard in a long time.

I'm guessing Liars are a noise rock/garage punk band of some kind? Their name reminds me of The Jesus Lizard's album Liar which is somewhat in that direction, and one of the best punk albums ever made if you ask me....

They've been all over the place since they began, I see a lot of parallels with WIRE in that they're always experimenting with their sound. I can't even really describe them in a short amount of space. I think of them as "experimental rock" with a focus on electronics. There, I guess that did it. And you're right about the Jesus Lizard - either Liar or Goat would be my favorite. I haven't listened to them in years. I first heard of them when they opened for Sonic Youth soon after they formed. Holy crap David Yow is a crazy man.

^Agreed. The Liars post made me think of Wire! I guess I know why, now.
