System of a Down? Definately not prog...

Every one of their songs follows the same pattern, fast, slow, fast, slow, it's never different. The musicians in System of a Down are far from virtuistic, I don't think there has even been a solo in a single SOAD song. They have no "epic" songs nor completely progressive albums. Just because they feature silly lyrics does not make them comparable to Frank Zappa. I do not see them as prog at all, I see them as grossly overrated popular metal.

And that's my two cents.

"It's amazing that we've been able to put up with each other for 35 years. Most marriages don't last that long these days."

I don't think System of a Down are very prog although they're a decent band.  I think when looking at the popular music being produced now it's easy to label a creative or different band as prog, but remember what it's being contrasted against, utter crap.  They're progressive compared to mainstream rock nowadays but that doesn't qualify them as being true progressive rock .

How would you describe Weather Report??

I'd say System are very much progressive. Progressive does not mean crazy
time signatures, long songs, and random solos. Progressive means, simply,
progressive, which SoaD are without a doubt.

Mezmerize is easily a prog album.

Yes they are. But that's not even a criteria for prog (although I think that it should be).

So you would have trouble working out/playing any of the licks they have written Mike?

What does that have to do with prog/non-prog? I could play most of Pink Floyd's music if I wanted to, that doesn't make them non-prog.

Sorry Mike- I was just trying to point out that their songs (I was gonna say compositions, but they are not) are not that complicated, even extremely simplistic

I know ... and you're even right. I just think that complexity is not a must for something to be considered prog. But it certainly helps.

BTW: I'm not for including SOAD - read my first post in this thread:

Quote

I haven't heard Mesmerize yet ... but their previous albums aren't prog. They're innovative, and I like them very much, but I think that they lack the ambition as musicians to create outstanding music. They're more interested in getting their message across and having fun on stage than in the music as a work of art. At least that's the consensus of several interviews that I read recently.
