Genesis, Trespass.

Overall about equal for me, although there is nothing on Trespass that's on a par with Man ERG imo. That is a mindblowing track and one of their best.

Pawn Hearts, but it's not a fair comparison. Pawn Hearts is VdGG fully realized (at least at that juncture) and that album is an acknowledged classic (even this month it made the cut in Classic Rock Magazine's article on the 250 albums "you need to own" (along with a nice separate 6 page article on Hammill/VdGG), and habitually makes the cut in similar lists, etc. Trespass is Genesis just starting to find its feet. A fairer poll would have been Pawn Hearts vs Foxtrot, or Trespass vs The Least. On the other hand, if you just like one band and not the other, it probably doesn't matter. (There is no Genesis album I'd rather hear over any VdGG album, so I get it if the reverse is true for someone else)

Trespass is a lovely album showing how much potential the band had. Pawn Hearts is an album that shows a band reaching its potential,

Trespass for me.......as much as I like VDGG music I could never really warm up to Hammill's voice.

I hold 'Hearts close to my heart. Fully realized while Trespass meanders here and there.

I like Trespass, it's great- but Pawn Hearts is on a whole other level.
The atmosphere on it is just so brilliantly put together. Plus Hammill's singing is just a knife in the heart.

If Tresspass is prog roots, then Pawn Hearts are fully grown prog leaves & flowers.

If they offer a release that strips Hammill's voice from the recording, I would say VdGG; unfortunately, that is not the case, so Trespass. |
My view except that they'd have to strip the sax out as well.

Perfection of total chaos vs. a mostly peaceful, pastoral record that has some gaps in it, as much as I love the pastoral peace on Trespass. Voted for the former.
I don't want to be one wave in the wat-te-e-e-er!!!

Pawn Hearts is much more powerful and devastatingly emotional, but obviously I'll have to go for Trespass. It just suits my taste perfectly. Also, I was surprised how intricate and well-written Trespass was, but really the opposite for Pawn Hearts. There are so few interesting chord progressions, but they manage to pull it off. Anyway, love em both but Genesis + Anthony Phillips > all other music

Neither are particular favourites but Pawn Hearts has a bit more grit ..so that one.
