The reviewer named 'Umur' covers a lot of ground in this field too. Worth perusing.

Since most people are listing heavy prog, I'll jump in with my (limited) knowledge on Extreme/Technical:

Gorguts - The most extreme it gets
Meshuggah - Fast-paced guitars, rapid-fire drumming
Obscura - Specifically check out Cosmogenesis for some melodic extreme metal (there's an oxymoron)
Becoming The Archetype - Don't get fooled by the Christian label they sometimes get, they are full blown death
Nocturnus - Part of the beginning of the genre, also known for being sci-fi and the inclusion of keyboards
Suffocation - Another groundbreaking artist, who popularized speed-playing in the genre. Also known to have the first slam riff in death metal history
Spawn Of Possession - Although less known than most, they are among my favourites, releasing a god-like album known as 'Incurso'. A landmark of the genre and probably my favourite one from it.

There is no dark side in the moon, really... Matter of fact, it's all dark...

Now Anglagard...
I first tried them quite early in my prog journey...(u know..the reviews)...even before Genesis/Yes/KC/VdGG. Everything about them was to my liking..but it didn't click..how could it have? I wasn't prepared for them.
Nothing metal there. Mostly instrumental wid some vocals in Swedish...i started out as a metalhead and i was a bit uncomfortable with symphonic bands back then...they seemed too mellow for my tastes. But this band changed my perception (about mellowness). Clearly the most agressive symphonic band out there..more so than most of the extreme bands. Took me 2 years to fully appreciate their unique brand of music. Now they are essential.

From the Heavy Prog category you can try The Mars Volta. As agressive as Anglagard/any extreme band out there in their approach. The kind of music that can make ur soul dance inside ur body (only if u happen to enjoy their music or else it might give u a headache )

So the constant double-bass drumming is referred to as 'blast beats' ??

No, blast beats have the constant snare hits.
I'm very much into all forms of metal, have no problem with growl vocals, but I'm really not feeling blast beats. In a drum beat, the snare defines the phrasing (especially in odd meters). When you have constant snares, it just kills any kind of groove...

What the heck does Tomas Haake do then ?? When he drums, it's like no-one else exists.   Meshuggah are my intro to all this extreme stuff - I'm mainly symph, Canterbury, Space, Kraut, R.P.I. etc. for decades, now I'm digging this. I'm still uncomfortable with 'growl', but generally the music behind it is insanely good, yet instrumental Extreme isn't quite there. I love double-kick, never tire from them

Textures is one of my favorite bands from this genre.  They just put out a new song a week or two ago, and it sounds great.

Just went and saw Tesseract and Skyharbor last night.  Both are great, though I'm not sure if it's heavy enough for you.

I would say go back and check out some of the late-80!s early-90's when prog metal was really finding it's legs. These 4 all rose from the hardcore/ metal crossover scene that exploded in the 80's, all with a very different take on the the manifestation of progmetal.

Watchtower - Control and Resistance
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Voivod - Demension Hätross and Nothingface
Cynic - Focus

Later stuff:

Unexpected
Martyr - Feeding the Abscess
Arsis - We are the Nightmare
Coprofago - Unorthodox Creative Criteria

Gorguts and Voivod.

Nevermore is great, I think everyone here already had a Nevermore phase.

If we're going back to the 90s, we cannot leave Invocator "Weave The Apocalypse" out of the picture.  That album was years ahead of its time.  Crazy grooves and all sorts of wild time signature changes.
