I'm a complete nerd when it comes to music. So I big part of my time is finding the latest releases to share and discuss.

Indie has been pretty easy, Reddit has a really good community called Indieheads that are on top of the latest and greatest 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But metal and prog rock elude me. I keep tabs on this site's top list for the year but I feel like I'm still missing a lot. What do you use to keep track of the latest releases?

I don't intentionally look for new 'prog' but I find a lot of newer releases from artists on PA in different sites with album reviews of new releases. I'm just interested in what's coming out so keep myself up to date on the usual music related sites I go to.

This might be a helpful thread to go through (the newer the posts, the newer the releases):

Hi. If you are interested in listening (not discussion) there is a  site that streams quite a lot of new prog releases for one month:

http://www.progstreaming.com/_wb/index.php

Personally, I find it very helpful and check it regularly.

Filter through "Genres"

(Too bad there is not a crap (metal prog) from good (normal prog) filter or at least warning.)

Thanks for the heads up, Darryl, this'll be really helpful indeed, and it'll probably do my wallet unrecoverable damage. LOL

For Prog, progstreaming have already been mentioned. There's also a site called metalstreaming.

If you want to go more in depth, you can also track recent additions to vendor emusic's database. They sort releases in various categories, so you can get a fairly thorough view of the latest releases there. They don't cover everything, but at this point at least more than 50% of albums released turns up there. Most of the albums are available on Spotify, Apple Music or Bandcamp. Search the former two first, google the album on Bandcamp if it doesn't turn up on them.

The emusic categories as of today:

Filters

Genres

Good and crap categories are very subjective. For sure another person may have quite opposite opinion of them.

What kind of warning do you think is necessary? In each post/album the genres are written.
