My self-hatred has reached points when I've cut myself while shaving, and know that it wasn't a mistake due to the soullessness of life in capitalism where everything is commoditized. Being middle-class, I am particularly inpatient that the working-class seem never to move and despair that if this recession doesn't energize people into defending themselves with their own class war to defend themselves, nothing will.

I once put a lit cigarette out on the roof of my mouth, but I think it had to do more with my age and drink intake that evening than any kind of social/political angst.  In any case, it sucked big time and I do not recommend it.

In fact, if you're young and you decide to avoid tobacco and alcohol altogether, you are the smart kids.  Neither is worth the trouble they can bring to you.

Never even considered it.
I like myself too much to hurt me.
Don't get me wrong, I don't love myself.
I'm just satisfied with where I'm at in my life.

Maybe you need a taste of not being middle-class and, if you'll forgive me, comfortable.  Nothing like some major discomfort and stress to make you really appreciate what you have.

At the risk of sounding obvious, if the OP was serious, you should seek professional help.  Depression can be addressed, even within the context of existential despair.

I'm going to take your post as a cry for help Condor. Self mutilation or 'cutting' is a common psychological problem that has gained speed with younger  and younger people these days.
Don't ignore your body's actions to signify that something is seriously wrong with you. Seek professional help , preferably with a mental health specialist like a psychiatrist. And I wish you all the best.

That is good advice. Self harm quickly becomes an addiction and can become a cycle that is very hard to break out of.

In my experience and training as a therapist, self-harm is usually intended as a distraction from emotional pain and experienced as providing relief. Not always, but most often. Of course, there are negative consequences, such as scarring, social stigma, infection and the risk of doing real medical harm. I don't know about 'addictive', but it can be overused.

If this is more than rarely, I would encourage seeking some help; anything from talking to a trusted friend to seeing a counsellor or psychiatrist. There are more effective ways to cope with the stress and despair of poorly regulated capitalism. Feel free to message.
More heavy prog, please!

One time, I kicked myself in the groin while jumping on a trampoline.

Joking aside, I hope Condor gets better.

Thanks for the advice. I'll discuss this with my CBT when I meet him.

I'm glad to see that you are being treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and have a resource in which to sort out your problems, or a way to different therapies or treatments if they're needed.

Please forgive my harsh tone as I have a young female family member who has similar issues and almost lost her left forearm due a nasty staph infection from cutting.

I hope things work out for you and please take up the offer to contact Twalsh if you get stuck.

I highly recommend SMART - http://www.smartrecovery.org/
It's a support group for all kinds of addictive behaviors.
If you are into online chat you can drop in on the 24/7 chat room.  We also have group meetings online and a lot of free tools.
I haven't self harmed but one of the facilitators for the local face to face meetings has.  My issue was/is alcohol.  Which I guess is actually a form of self harm...

I can only reiterate what others have said: talking openly about this is the first step, but from now on you need face-to-face help from a trained medical professional, not the well-meaning advice from random people on the internet.
What?

Self harm comes in many forms and shapes, what all of them have in common is that you detach from your self to the point that your emotional, inner pain becomes to massive and that the mind consciously or subconsciously starts looking for a manner to bring relief. Drugs, alcohol and work have been typical avenues of escape, and there's a growing trend to use physical pain as a mean to mirror the inner emotional pain as well, presumably in an attempt to balance the body and the mind.

Ultimately this means that something is badly amiss with you as a person, and the reasons for those will be personal and for internal reasons. Uncovering the underlying causes and dealing with them, accepting them, and dealing with the negative patterns that have formed due to these issues being allowed to fester is vital.

I would first suggest as others have to seek professional help.

Other things you can try:

Get a heavy bag and punch / kick the sh*t out of it.   This helped me in my darkest hours to some extent.  You can also excerpt yourself in exercise.  Heavy lifting will leave you in pain the next day for the entire day.  When lifting, especially in anger, be vigilant and concentrate on technique.

Meditate… Stillness of mind is extremely difficult even when in a peaceful and loving state already.  Sit in a chair with spine straight or crossed logged on floor or couch.  Focus on one thing and one thing only.  Could be your breath, a word, a phrase or anything you want.  Thoughts will inevitably cross your mind but don’t get discouraged and return to your focus point.

A very powerful meditation practice is the Hong-Sau technique.   As you inhale mentally say Hong (rhymes with song), as you exhale mentally say Sau (saw).  This will synchronous your breath and mind.  With a focused mind the entire cosmos opens up to you.

Hong-Sau means I am He; I am Spirit.  Spirit is Love and Joy.

A little more info on this technique here:

Do the right thing Condor, and seek help.

I've had mental health problems most of my adult life, although self harming has never been part of it, but one thing I've learnt is that people don't wanna know! You need to speak to someone whose job it is to listen. All the best.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
