I just want to post this as i found it to be good at describing prog, it mainly wrrites and focuses on the Lamb, but also gives nice overview on prog as a whole as well.

I recently went over to the College of Fine Arts (at the University of Kentucky) and met a music professor who wrote this:
My husband will be getting it for Christmas.

So ....what are the best overall books about prog rock ever written....?
I only have Jerry Lucky's book Progressive Rock Files , and Joynson's Tapestry of Delights....which is more of an early music collection than a prog book. |

I've also got Ed Macan's Rocking the Classics: English Progressive Rock and the Counterculture on my list. The reviews are very positive.

Very interesting and well-written book, though I don't always agree with his insights. A must-read for prog fans in any case. |

I have enjoyed e.g. Prophets & Sages by Mark Powell,
The Strawberry Bricks Guide to Progressive Rock by Charles Snider and Scented Gardens of the Mind: A Guide to the Golden Era of Progressive Rock (1968-1980) in More Than 20 European Countries by Dag Erik Asbjörnsen. The latter is a massive tome and costs hundreds of euros (luckily I had it on loan from a library). ...But of course my personally dearest (and practically the best fulfilment of my idea of the most user-friendly) prog book is the one with my own name on the cover. |

Aamunkoiton portit. The book is in Finnish, naturally... The title means The Gates of Dawn, taken from the first album in the 1967 - 1979 timeline. (My collaborator page shares some further information.) |
