Terrible sound quality, which makes it harder. The only thing I can offer is perhaps a Barclay James Harvest outtake ?

PussyWillow is the best distillation of the classic Tull formula, juxtaposing Anderson's gruff but expressive vocals and a strong, insistent melody bolstered by well-placed, crunchy guitar chords.

Don't know the artist and couldn't match the lyrics, but the chorus seems to be;
The desert deepens as it passes But that's my password to surrender The desert deepens as it passes Edited by Atavachron - February 21 2017 at 19:37 |

No need to be sorry for the low sound quality, the song can be heard well enough to be recognized, if it happens to be familiar.
Sadly I don't remember ever having heard it before. Seems to be a very nice song and I hope the mystery will be solved. It certainly has similarities to their late 70's Barclay James Harvest, but I guess the artist in question is far less familiar in the prog circles (ie. not necessarily prog-related at all). American probably.

Could you rerecord this using a line/headphone out from the tape player plugged into a line input on your computer? Much better chance of someone being able to understand some lyrics and identify the song.

Sounds to me more like: "The desert is a silent passage [Blah blah blah] passport to serenity The desert is a silent passage" It also sounds as if English may not be a first language for the singer. Google has no relevant results for those, though. The riff just after the second "silent passage" line sounds like it was lifted from "Second Nature" by Rush, down to some elements of the production. |

thank you again
but the song is before rush's album what about we concentrate in the voice? maybe we "goal" I always thought it was Dobie Gray but his discography has not the song although he could put it in some collection for exemple he sang THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN live ! (THE BAND) and it's in an album with others artists called VOLUNTER JAM. listen ! it's wonderful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SYtqI0PQLY

Perhaps I was too optimistic concerning the sound quality. It is admittedly very hard to hear the lyrics properly, and I'm afraid that won't be the way to solve the secret.
I went through some country/folk rock artists in allmusic.com (where one can also hear song excerpts), and my best bet is GENE CLARK. I didn't find the right song though, but could this be the right artist? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXuuJ9aZswA&list=PL8a8cutYP7focgLNtBH8B3EaCMLikq7Ur ('Silver Raven', 1974)

Not really my cup of tea, it's a bit sentimental and kinda stuck in its time. As a part of an album it might work better in context, but that kind of romantic moaning doesn't do it for me. |

^ you are such a tough guy David. Never forget though.. every tough guy.. has his soft side.
In fact I'm making very lewd eyes at Raff right now... though the sound quality sort of kills the moment. Then again... it is Raff.. who need inspiration HAH!!! but no OP.. no dice .. never heard it. |
