Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'

Jack Vance - (1916 - 2013) American mystery, fantasy, and science fiction author, and one of my all-time favourite writers. His heroes were always clever (they always suspected what the reader wanted them to), he wrote with great style and command of language, and there was much humour in his work. Buy any Vance book you find (likely in a 2nd-hand bookstore, these days). RIP, Jack.

(List people by surname--Western naming conventions--please.)

Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) # 1 science fiction author of my youth.
I'm now re-reading the classic short story collection "The Illustrated Man" (43 years later): good stuff, if a bit dated by science, society, and my more mature tastes. Still, his stories (especially the cycle The Martian Chronicles) changed my life. After Jules Verne, Bradbury was my intro to sci fi.

In my opinion, this convention shall be used cum grano salis. It does not work automatically for:

- African, Asian and Native American names;
- People better known by their monickers or sobriquets, like Blackbeard, the pirate;
- People better known by their Christian names, like Naopleon or Michelangelo, the artist;
- People who lived before the Renaissance;
- Monarchs, Popes, etc;
- Many fictional or legendary characters.

Well, that's my opinion. Wink

^ Yes, that makes sense, amigo Guiho. Still, I'd have called that fictional character a "T."

Daniel Defoe (1660 - 1731) English writer, political pamphleteer, and trader. Defoe is best remembered as the author of Robinson Crusoe, second only to the Bible in translations. I read the fascinating book as a child, as I am sure many here did also.
