Topic: Can or PFM? Posted: March 26 2017 at 10:21 |
Perhaps the two best-know representatives of their respective countries. Almost opposite in terms of sound. Dark, rhythmic Can or organic, mellow PFM?
In my case, if we compare their 3 major albums, Tago Mago > Storia Di Un Minuto, Ege Bamyasi < Per Un Amico, Future Days > L'Isola Di Niente.

Tough one... Storia Di Un Minuto crushes anything by Can, but PFM never produced anything that great again, excepting Appena Un Po. Can is much more consistent, with at least two or three really good to great albums.

Tago Mago > Storia Di Un Minuto, Ege Bamyasi > Per Un Amico, Future Days < L'Isola Di Niente.
same result... different route...
Tago tops any of the PFM albums.. and Storia tops any of the other Can albums
pretty much dead even ... if you add later albums.. PFM rules.. add in the fact Can had a running start before comparing major albums.. again advantage PFM. Overall classics... yeah advantage Can
dead even man ..dead even. So alone in the ballot box... give the vote to Can for the nebulous impact and influence quality

I'll give it to PFM, but Can is definitely a band that I'm growing increasingly appreciative of.

With the above PFM's albums - PFM is a clear winner. But only mention Chocolate Kings and/or Jet Lag, and everything collapses.

I would never really compare the two, but I guess I overall prefer Can. Monster Movie, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Can/Inner Space are all excellent records. I love PFM too, especially Photos of Ghosts and Jet Lag, but I'm overall more familiar with Can.

I dig the heck out of Can, more so than ever before these days, but for me PFM has a terrific run of `Storia Di Un Minuto' - `Per Un Amico' - `L'Isola Di Niente' - `Live in the USA' - `Chocolate Kings' (I'm not personally a fan of this one, but I don't think it's a bad album) - `Jet-Lag' and `Passpartù' (yes, really, I think it's a charming LP, and at least they were back to singing in Italian!). Plus throw in the `Paper Cuts' live 1975-76 archival two-album set from 2014, and that's a ton of great music from their boom period! `Stati Di Immaginazione' from 2006 and `A.D. 2010 - La Buona Novella' from 2010 are also very decent modern works of great merit too.

PFM is about to perform at the Brancaccio, one of the historical theathres in Rome. They should play a sort of greatest hits along their career. I don't know the prices, yet.

Can for me. In front of Banco, the choice would have been much more difficult.
