One song missing from the poll that feels "proggy" to me is Keep It Dark. Otherwise, from this time period Dodo/Lurker has been a favorite of mine.

^ Yeah. The Pop songs you mention were blatant commercialism, but they stuck some more 'involved' pieces on the albums as well. That's All is a really, REALLY great little ditty. Nifty bass-line, organ sounding solo from Banks, guitar solo from Mike. Very well crafted.

It's difficult to muster respect for songs like Illegal Alien and Invisible Touch, but I get what you mean. I actually quite like their 80's sound, and prefer it to that awful neo-prog sound, but most of the time the songs weren't there for me. Each post Duke album would have a few gems and a lot of drek.

I'm thinking that Genesis compromised during this 80's stylistic shift. They produced Prog pieces (whilst avoiding the, at that time, new Neo-Prog cliches of Marillion, I.Q. and Twelfth Night (among others). A very valid cross-pollination of Progressive Rock with what was cutting edge 80's sensibilities. Sure their 80's things weren't a patch on Selling England, but still engaging and interesting. I'll always prefer the 70's albums, but embrace their 80's-onward albums with respect.

The proggiest songs are not necessarily my favourites. Some songs are not very proggy, but still excellent (Mama, Domino).

I guess my favourite proggy Genesis song from the 80's would have to be "Home by the Sea / 2d Home..." (though I only know the live versions)... but for me that's a perfect blend of 80's and prog. On the other hand, I do agree with Dodo/Lurker, of course, but even more notable would be the complete song (I don't remember the names of the other parts) that goes over 10 min (or even near 17 min? I don't really remember it so well, I only heard it a few times on YouTube).

Not much on FGTR is what I would call prog or even really proto prog. There is a brief instrumental part before the Serpent and the Serpent itself might be one of the proggiest but but over all this album is probably best categorized as baroque pop. I don't know if I would say it's the most under rated in their catalog but it's probably the least understood and certainly one of their most overlooked. I think you really only need it if you are a completist, a hardcore Genesis fanatic or just really curious as to what they sounded like early on. |
