While it is overall correct to see Tasavallan Presidentti as a Jazz/fussion outfit, the early debut is a more diverse but also diffuse mix of directions, exploring folk and classic, blues and early progrock vibes, sometimes with a great vocal in nice melodic beat music style.

It is clear that the band haven’t found their feets and the lack of focus get a bit too much sometimes but all in all an interesting debut from one of the best Finnish prog bands, also the birthplace of the brilliant Jukka Tolonen later to have succes as a band leader.

Tasavallan Presidentti - Tasavallan Presidentti (1969)

Miriodor self titled 2nd album is a kind of light avant-garde progressive rock, and as such might be a great way into avant for people comming from other genres, as it lack some of the very experimental elements you find on most other avant albums. That said it may for the more routined listener come out a bit weak.

Miriodor – Miriodor (1986)

Note: If you end up with a 14 track version – the original is 9 tracks.

I prefer to listen to the extra 5 tracks in a separate session not to confuse what was the original intention of the artist – the album is extended from 41 to unreasonable 73 min, that said the 5 track are fine in their own separate space.

Tōru Takemitsu was born in Tokyo 1930
Post war Takemitsu started taking interest in Western classical music, during the 1950’s he was composing in a very modern western style.
During the late 1950’s and early 1960’s Takemitsu took interest in John Cage’s music and philosophies, Cage’s interest in Zen woke his own interests in the qualities of Japanese traditional music, from this point he started studying traditional music and compose with hints of traditional Japan. Making a very interesting fusion of Moders Western Clasical and old Japanese music
