Hello one and all! Let me explain first why I am here, I have always liked Heavy Metal music, but just recently I discovered Dream Theater, Pink Floyd and Opeth (Does that one count?) and I really like them. I currently own Darkside of the Moon & The Wall for Pink Floyd, Orchid for Opeth, and Awake, Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees & Train of Thought for Dream Theater. I've downloaded alot of MP3s from this website, and I really like Camel, Evergrey, Gentle Giant, King Crimsom, EL&P and Spock's Beard. Can anyone suggest how I can here more from these artists? I'm already broke from buying all those other CDs Anywere I can find more MP3s?
Cheers |

Hi, Diet', welcome to this forum dedicated mainly to Mariah Carey (no, that's not a joke).
Kazaa is a good source of mp3 (you can download entire albums by GG, Camel, Eloy for example). There you can also find all tracks from the last Evergrey, Dream Theater or Ayreon.

it's supposed to specialise in techno but you can find a lot of other stuff there, perhaps more prog metal than prog rock though. |

NO! Soulseek is also excellent for progressive music! Good advice, goose. You can find Nektar, Gentle Giant, Soft Machine, Tool... anything! |

Do you guys download music
Maybe you should tune in to one of the many online progrock radio stations, it's a great source for hearing a lot of different bands and forms of prog. |

I download TONS of music. I'd never have ended up here had I not dowloaded music. Music downloading allows you to discover new music that you would never have even considered listening to normally. It's how I discovered prog, and it's also how I've discovered the vast majority of the prog artists I listen to. I still buy their albums, but I often download them first.

Ok, thanks guys, I checked out Soulseek, but I'm not sure about it. I've had bad experience with Kazaa, Spyware, Viruses, Porno instead of music videos ect... Is this program okay for stuff like that? Cheers |

Soulseek's always been fine with me. It has no spyware, and people tend to label things correctly. It does use quite a bit of memory, however, and seems to screw up with my firewall occasionally. It's still far superior to any other p2p I've found, at least for what I want.

I buy. I only download clips every now and then. @ dietcokeman; Seems like you've already discovered some of the best bands in progrock. Well there are tons more. Once you open the gate to this world there's no turning back. Unless of course you will repent and burn your collection so far. It's all evil Edited by Aquarius |

I am also a prog newbie, but with slightly different tastes than DCM. I came to this site because one of my roommates suggested that I listen to Dream Theater, and I must say that I liked the couple songs I heard and plan on purchasin one of their albums in the near future. I would like to find other bands here as well, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a starting point for someone with previous influences such as Tool, The Mars Volta, Coheed & Cambria, Pink Floyd, etc. As I said, I'm new here, and there is an overwhelming number of bands listed on this site. Thanks! |
