Still, even with the Genesis guys on Acolyte, it's still a solo album. It's an identity thing, the songwriting and band credits are secondary. Take Rod Stewart for example. He made some of the best music of his career with Faces, but still had Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian MacLagan, and Kenny Jones here and there on a couple of his SOLO records in the early to mid Seventies. The credits on Every Picture Tells a Story or Never A Dull Moment are almost the same as Acolyte in that it features some familiar musicians and writers interspersed with others.

The point is, for both Howe and Hackett here, they were making/releasing records away from their respective groups.

^ I just know a little bit of Rod Stewart's career, nor have I heard so many whole albums, but for me The Faces albums and his solo albums feel like the same... perhaps I should check the songs I have in my lists, see which ones are from one or the other, and check out writing credits and particular sounds from the other band members...

Voyage of the Acolyte has some good moments, but it's actually best when it's looking forward to where Hackett would go in the future. I have never considered it a "missing Genesis album", and this album is now no longer in my collection.

The Steve Howe Album receives my vote, and is one of his best.

Never really enjoyed Howe's solo stuff outside the Steve Howe Trio - that jazzy trio project built around Howe's guitar, Hammond organ and his son on drums.  Wouldn't it be a gas if Bruford came out of retirement to whap the skins in a jazz trio with Howe and......Tony Kaye?  Wakeman?  Moraz?  Reimagining Relayer in that format sounds like an "old man" way of reinvigorating the back catalog and maybe creating something new, eh?
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

It might have been better to have polls of albums from the same year:

1975 Steve Howe - Beginnings
----- vs.-----
1975 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte

1979 The Steve Howe Album
----- vs.-----
1979 Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings

Hackett would handily win both polls, I think.

Of those two Hackett is better, but I much prefer Howe's Beginings so with this one my voting could be different

You could have add Steve Hillage debut album, in that way it could have been an epic prog battle between the Steves.

Oh, come off it. The Steve Howe Album is at least a 4 star album.

Frankly, I'm torn. I tend to veer more towards Acolyte because it sounds like Nobuo Uematsu borrowed heavily from the album for composing Final Fantasy VII.

I just listened to that soundtrack and could not find any similarity. Are you certain it is number VII?

I agree .....Howe is a great player but an interesting  songwriter he is not.
Voyage is far far better than Howe's lp.
