Topic: Prog CD buying strategy Posted: September 20 2005 at 09:57 |
I'd be interested to know your answers to the following questions:
- how many CDs do you buy each month on average?
- how do you normally decide what to buy?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Well, in average i would say 10 a month but it's not really true cos I buy 150 a year :p
It depends on how many treasures and good deals I find.

3 - 5 a month. Mostly from Amazon.
I usually decide what to buy from reading reviews in the archives, or from discussions on here.
I've already got my eye on a Dixie Dreggs album for one of this months purchases, after our discussion the other day, Bob

10 CDs a month? It must be difficult to listen to so much, particularly considering the huge back catalogue that must build up.

Not at all. When I am online I almost always listen to some of my CDs. This way I usually am able to listen to 3 CDs a day while I sit at work in a production studio. (I listen and read/post on forums during breaks of course).

Bob, I live in at work, and I get to listen to 5-10 CDs a day, so I get through them!
and before you ask, I've tried to get a life, but no-one wants me...

Yes I had some days when I was in the office on my own and managed to listen to 8 CDs a day. Those were happy days!

I also get a bit of a kick out of hunting for cheapies on ebay; occasionally you come across real bargains, such as the ones I have posted in the Recent Purchases thread in the Recommendations forum..

At present none (that's being a student for you, especially coming from the North where we still buy stuff with pigs and goats to down here where prices are pretty much in line with London ) but when I had a job I was getting something up to 20 a month sometimes , usually around five though I guess.

1) way too many! recently from 4 to 8 per week (on average) 2) I take advice from the reviews on this or other sites, or I download samples or mp3s to hear what an artist sounds like. Another source of information is the tiny shop run by two friends - that's where I first listened to Happy the Man and Magnum among other bands.

- how many CDs do you buy each month on average? - depends on the cash flow, sometimes i buy upwards of 10 at a time, sometimes i only get like 2 or 3 a month
- how do you normally decide what to buy? - usually off the internet first, i usually have decided what i want to buy when i get there.

I can't afford too many usually, so it's about 2 a month, but occasionally I will splash out on another 2 or 3 if the mood takes me. I get most of mine from a mail order company called GFT, run by the man who is also boss of the Cyclops record label, Malcolm Parker. His service is second to none, orders arriving literally two days, (or three at the most) after sending for them. I usually choose what to get after looking on this site.

At the moment I'm buying way too many CDs ... what can I do, I discovered the archives a few months ago and there's so much to catch up.
BTW: I listen to music all day, usually. I get up and put some music on. On the way to the office I listen to music on my mp3 player. At work I listen to music like 60% of the time. On the way back home it's mp3 again. Then at home I guess that 50% of the time some music is on.
That means that each day I'm listening to music for easily more than 5 hours.

15-20 per month for me probably. I have an Excel spreadsheet with all the CDs I'm interested in prioritized from 1 to 5. (Yes I am a nerd.)

I can get away with about 10-15 cd's a month before my wife really starts complaining.
And since discovering PA most of what I decide to buy are based on recommendations from my fellow forum members
