Hit the nail right on the head.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

If you were to rephrase this question as to what is the best work out/exercise music then Oz gets it hands down.  If you want to talk music tha...ove me in another kind of way,,
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

no contest as far as Im concerned
Ozric Tentacles always seemed like a poor man's Hawkwind to me without lyrics, or the occasionsl passeages of intensity that Hawkwind ( and Hawklords) do so well

They may have taken this turn because this was just the music they wanted to play at the time. Doesn't need to have any element of a sell-out. Actually I love most of that material, In Absentia and Deadwing are my fav PT albums, and I am not a metalhead at all. In fact I vote for PT for the variety that they offer. I like OT a lot but I'm not sure anyone needs more than their two or three top albums.

I'll vote for the Ozrics.

Despite their music being formulaic and predictable, it gave me more pleasure in the 90's (my crazy years) than PT ever did. Porcupine Tree write and perform songs, and they have made a handful of very worthy albums (In Absentia may be among my favourte prog albums) but the Ozrics make bubble gum for the ears...but bubble gum that's laced with high grade quality acid.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Ozric Tentacles never really made that transition to the "big time" but they did at some point seem to gain a lot of fans in the jam band community.

Ozric is fine, but still Porcupine Tree with a huge margin.
