I think people have this weird idea that if you love something you must take it seriously, and if you make fun of something you must hate it. I think that's completely untrue; you can be passionate about a style of music but still be self-aware about the absurdity and contrivances associated with it.

I could totally believe TAAB was a parody, especially if you listen to the live versions from the time; 80 minutes long and they still didn't play about a quarter of the album. There are extended solos that go nowhere, the song gets interrupted by a telephone call, and absurd spoken word sections including a musical analysis and a news report as an interlude between the two sides. But still, it's clear to me that Anderson was trying to write enjoyable music with strong melodies and lyrics rather than throwing a bunch of garbage together because it's a "joke".

Same with Gentle Giant - I can totally see Acquiring The Taste being tongue in cheek especially considering the album cover (which is literally designed to look like a tongue entering a pair of "cheeks") and their pretentious declaration about the album's purpose. Still, you could tell that they were having a lot of fun creating over-the-top music.

I guess I should restate my example to get back on track

so everyone knows Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria has this big signature hairdo. Sometime in November 2018 he posted a photo on Instagram saying he cut it off and people were outraged. Claudio even kept it going in one of their concerts but at one point he was doing a solo and the hat flew off and the hair was revealed. The crowd went NUTS. Best prank imo.

From what I read online right before Tool's newest album was released (Fear Inoculum):

Someone from a major American department store claimed he'd gotten a hold of the album a few days before the release.
If you know Tool fans, you know everyone was dying to hear it and people were going insane about a potential leak.
Someone contacted the guy because, it turned out, the guy didn't have a way to put the album online himself, but he was taking photos of his hands holding the album, so fans knew it was the real thing.
Tool fans were going insane over the whole thing.
The person posting the pictures and saying he had the album stopped responding to messages about meeting up to hand over the album so it could be leaked.

Apparently, it was Maynard James Keenan holding the album the whole while. He obviously never intended to leak the album and was just messing with his fans and getting them all riled up. This guy is known for pranking his fans, so it wasn't the first he'd done it and it hopefully won't be his last.

Frank Zappa had to be one of the greatest trollers in history. Starting from the first Mothers album, almost everything with lyrics he's written has been one long trollfest.

I always think of the project "Stanley Snail," which trolled Yes, Bill Bruford's band etc.  

Stanley Snail was a one-off project for a Yes Tribute album comprised of Kevin Gilbert (Keys, Low Vocals), Mike Keneally (Guitars, Mid Vocals), Nick D'Virgilio(Drums, High Vocals) and Bryan Beller (bass). Produced and Engineered by Kevin Gilbert.
They was a made-up band named after a mishearing of the lyrics to "Siberian Khatru" (Gold stainless nail being heard as "Go Stanley Snail").

The middle section of the original Yes song "Siberian Khatru" is replaced with a section of Sahara Of Snow from Bill Bruford's solo album One of a Kind.

First, they beg him to finally record a sequel to Tubular Bells. What they get is Amarok
Second, a while later he breaks up with Virgin, goes to Warner. First album released - Tubular Bells II.

Mike Oldfield's last album for Virgin Records was "Heaven's Open" (1991). I wish heaven had opened up and swallowed that album whole because it's Mike Oldfield's worst album in my opinion. Confused
