^ That's a generous review. Maybe I was a bit harsh - the Grape throwing scene was pretty hilarious and Melissa McCarthy was surprisingly good. I just felt a bit let down by the whole thing. 

Now on to my wife's choice: Season 2 of Fort Salem. It's not great but has a nice charm about it.

If something passes the time and doesn't annoy me then it often gets 7/10. Roughly I tend to see it like this:

5/10 and below not really worth bothering with 
6/10 watchable and has decent production standards
7/10 very entertaining , high production standards but not especially original
8/10 one of the more interesting things to come out this year
9/10 top notch , interesting, original and a little challenging
10/10 very rare indeed . Has to be perfect. Maybe Boardwalk Empire , Six Feet Under fall into that category but not a lot else in my book!

We just finished watching the sixth and last episode of "One Lane Bridge", a crime series from New Zealand. In a way it was the New Zealand version of "Twin Peaks". Detective Ariki Davis is a Maori cop who just moved to Queenstown. He has matakite, a Maori word for "second sight". The bridge mentioned in the title is kind of jinxed; many murders or suicides took place there. A man either fell or was pushed from that bridge, and the police have to find out what happened. And he has these strange visions of lots of dead people around or on the bridge. Very interesting with a surprise ending. The series was from 2020, and it looks as if there is a second season. But it wasn't shown in Germany yet.

Pennyworth (Season 2) 2021

I probably didn't enjoy as much as most but it was okay. Too much stylistic mish mash of different era's of recent British history for my taste and I found the storyline charting a fictional rise in fascism not convincing and even a little contrived. On the plus side, singer/actor Paloma Faith is a hoot playing a deranged northern psycho 'b***h' while James Purefoy added much needed tension and threat. 7/10

Just finished Midnight Mass.  If you want a deep thinking, slow boiling, excellently acted and scary-as-hell series to watch for this Halloween season, this is THE one to watch.  The actors are many of the same cast as The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor and it was created and directed by Mike Flanagan, same as The Haunting mini-series.  

I'm not going to tell you much about it, other than the build up is slow at first, but the character development is excellent.  There are scenes throughout that will stick with you for a long time.  And there are so many messages here plus a lot of homage to Stephen King, Anne Rice and others.  This is one of the best horror series I have watched recently and it will not only frighten you, but it will make you think and even pull at the heartstrings.  There is a lot of talking, but I never got bored with the dialogue as everything seemed to pertain to the big picture.  It's almost perfect.  9.5/10

Also finished Nine Perfect Strangers and thought it was pretty good.  Yes, it's a bit odd, but that makes it interesting.  The acting is pretty good as there are a lot of big names here.  I thought the story lines tended to get a bit lost sometimes though.  7/10

we just watched the first 2 (or rather 4; I'll explain) episodes of "Bodyguard", a 6-part British political thriller from 2018. David Budd (played by Richard Madden), a British Army war veteran suffering from PTSD, who is now working for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service who is divorced with two kids who live with their mum, foils a terrorist bomb attack on a train and is assigned as the principal protection officer (PPO) for the ambitious female home secretary of the UK, whose politics he despises. she is pushing a planned new law called RIPA 18, an extension of the RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) from 2000 which would give the police access to private data of citizens. the two have an affair.

a first attempted sniper assassination of her fails, a second attempt with a bomb is successful though. Budd tries to keep their affair secret and becomes suspicious because of this.

BBC One made this a 6 part series; German TV joined 2 of these episodes respectively, so the series became a 3 part one for German TV.

the series received numerous awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe as best television series in the category drama. Madden received a Golden Globe as best actor in a television series in the category drama.

we watched the first 2 episodes at the online channel of ZDF (a German TV channel); episode 3 is not available yet. the series is top notch!

oh, and on a side note: the name of the female home secretary is, believe it or not, Julia Montague, a combination of Julia Capulet and Romeo Montague from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"

^The Mrs and I finished that one about a month ago and really enjoyed it.
Now we're on season 8 of MI5 (Spooks). The action never lets up and they change cast as often as they can. Never get too attached when you work for domestic counter intelligence.

I've only watched the first 2 episodes but the second episode knocked my every which way sideways and now I'm fully 'in'. Its very impressive in the character development side and that is so important to generate tension. There were some fantastic acting and scenes in the Haunting of Hill House , especially the one with the 2 sisters when they were in the car (and then out) . This production team clearly understand drama in its basic form as well as what really works horror wise.

The final episode is amazing for the amount of tension it creates. It was a very special thing. You may well  know that the main writer and also producer is Jed Mercurio. Well there aren't many writers/producers as famous as the actors but this guy certainly is. IMO there is only one other guy on his level UK wise and that is Steven Knight who is responsible for Peaky Blinders and See. After you finish Bodyguard I strongly recommend Vigil. Maybe not quite quite as great as Bodyguard , set on a British nuclear submarine with lots of throw back to the cold war, its very enjoyable with loads of twists and turns!

Brand New Cherry Flavor 2021

aside from Midnight Mass (but I'm still getting through that) this is probably the best thing on Netflix I've seen for a while. Billed as 'Grindhouse' which I have to confess I know nothing about other than Tarentino is a fan, this is plain weird but also very erotic and gory a lot of the time. Very impressed with the cast especially the lead actor Rosa Salazar and the ever dependable Catherine Keener. The set up is that a famous producer (played to slimy excellence by Eric Lange) wants to develop a short made by Lisa Nova (a budding writer and director played by Salazar) into a feature film . However he still believes in the 'casting couch' approach and tries to take advantage of Nova sexually. Then enters Keener's character ( a kind of witch)  to provide support supposedly. It goes very deliciously dark at times but stays on track throughout. Loved it totally. 9.5/10

My wife and I finished Squid Game last night. We only watched one a day so it could be fully appreciated and to focus on the subs (we won't watched dubbed shows). I'd put it up there with one of the best TV shows ever, along with Breaking Bad and The Leftovers. Easily 10/10.

The Man in the High Castle (US/UK/Canada - 2015/2019): Wow! Antagonist-centrism. It was very dominant. Rufus Sewell did a great job here. The first 2 seasons were great, the third was boring. I even considered leaving it somewhere there. The 4th and the final season was decent, so glad to have finished it. Dark, grim, gritty... Sobreity and hilariousness (comedy) at times play ping-pong. I wished the ending part had been more British than American. Same tricks, same and lame drama... Anyway, I was expecting that. So, not a frustration for my part.

I'll not talk about its political aspect (I don't see myself adequate to do so.), nor can I assess how successful it is as an adaptation. (I haven't read Philip K. Dick's work.)

Anyway, a 8/10 seems proper, for me. It was an impressive TV series. Recommended, if you're not very sensitive about some dirty history. I'll not give further spoilers.

Must admit it took a turn I wasn't expecting! I binged the rest on Monday and it didn't disappoint. I felt that all the characters were given due respect and consideration making quite realistic choices (although I expect some will argue this point!) and also importantly it never gave into just using shocks for the sake of it . I don't think its a spoiler to say that some CGI is used but it totally looked real to me. I loved the poetic end which as previously pointed out, stays with you. 10/10

I'm happy to hear you loved it.  It's one that I'll remember for quite a while and probably will use it as a bar to measure other series that are of the same genre.  It's definitely one of the best of its kind with some of the strongest character development that I've seen in its genre in a long time.

Truth Be Told S1

Crime based drama about a podcaster investigating a potential miscarriage of justice in the past. A young man is convicted of murdering a man in house in front of his family. One of the family members testifies to seeing him run from the scene at about the time it happened. 20 years later and the truth slowly unravels. Nicely acted by an ensemble cast including Octavia Spencer and Aaron Paul plus the actress who played the young version of the character taken from Stephen King's Misery in Castle Rock. Very well written and good twists. 8/10

The Chair 2021
Starring Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Jay Duplass , this reminded me a little bit the classic British TV show of the 1980's A Very Peculiar Practice. This one however is an American university , specifically the English faculty, and the progressive new 'Chair' (played by Oh) is brought in to shake things up and perhaps move a few 'dinosaurs' on. Only 6 episodes and quite short at that, I found it charming and witty. Nicely played by the leads , its an easy watch if you don't want anything too 'heavy'. 8/10
