Two rockin' songs from two Dream albums. One a fairly obscure oldie and one from a juggernaut in the Prog metal sphere. This is not intended as a contest. Message - From Books and Dreams - "Dreams And Nightmares (Dreams)" Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite - "Afterlife" From their respective albums, I felt that these paired up reasonably well. A bit of an odd poll perhaps. I am much more into the Message. Edited by Logan - September 22 2021 at 08:10 |

My vote goes to Message, amazing album and this is my fav song on that album.
Tommy Mcguin´s voice slightly reminds me of Peter Gabriel and his work on this album playing sax and mellotrons its fabulous

^ I first heard it on youtube, that being the first I heard from the album. "Dreams" blew me away. I love the heavy riffage, and the sax is super. Great song per my tastes.

Which shows you just didn't care to listen: Message is not prog metal at all. My vote goes to Message, not just because it is not prog metal, but because it is musically much more interesting than the Dream Theater track (and personally, I think that that DT album is rather overrated, but, personally, I also think that notions as "underrated" or "overrated" should be banned from PA and everyone who uses it excluded for at least six months...).

apologies. I misread. The Message track is excellent. It’s just when people mention prog metal my attention wanes!

DT's debut album is anything but overrated, in fact, if you ask me, it's often overlooked, deserves better. There are other DT albums I find overrated, even overhyped.

I use these terms either to vex people, or when I am condescending. It works! You get annoyed! But honestly, I'm not an egocentric person. I never think or claim that my assessments are superior to others. I don't remember hearing the non-DT song. I'll check it out soon and present my take, together with my vote. I understand, because prog metal is not what I prefer either. But I must say that of the prog metal bands I find some of the earlier Dream Theater albums really splendid. Images and Words is OK, but in my opinion not that great as some want to make believe... but that's just my subjective appreciation.

Sure, and in some way, especially from a (metally) historical point of view, I think you're absolutely right. But musically, I think DT did much better on their subsequent albums...

My favourite track off DT's debut is "The Ytse Jam" and I think that became a real classic of DT (had it not fit for me so well in this well with Dreams, then I likely would have included that one) The Ytse Jam does remind of Spinal Tap's Rock 'n Roll Creation in part, but that's not a bad thing as I love Spinal Tap.
As for Message here, I'd call it heavy psych/ Krautrock. The band is included in Psych/Space at PA. it isn't Prog Metal, but there are classic early 70s heavy metal qualities to "Dreams". I love its groove. I'd liken elements of it it to the acts like Black Widow, Lucifer's Friend, Atomic Rooster, Bram Stoker, Black Sabbath, Writing on the Wall, Yesterday's Children, Coven as well as some Flower Travelin' Band, Sir Lord Baltimore, Nektar.... That and Nightmares off the same album (the two long tracks) I find brilliant. "Dream" is riff-based music to groove to for me. Psych is a really important element to me often in music, and I would like to discover more psych metal type music. With an name like Dream Theater, I had expected it at first to have more of a cosmic, psychedelic, dreamy sound (to be a little more Tangerine Dream one might say) since I first checked it out without knowing much about the music. |

Gonna vote for Message. A very good song capturing the 70s' spirit.
Dream Theater's song is not bad either, but the sound is not refined enough. Some music can tolerate and even cherish this, but one seeks "perfection" and refinement in Dream Theater's music. At least I do so. That's why I like Awake of them far better than I&W. |

I'm not familiar with Message but I'll definitely look into them. Great song AND cover art. (Interestingly, some reviews outside this site say the first Message album was "a lot less mainstream," which is why this one disappointed.)
I like "Afterlife" a lot, too, since it's on my favorite Dream Theater album.
