Anyone here like (or loath) The Flaming Lips?

I bought "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" a few months ago in a CD sale, based solely on all the critical blag about it on the sleeve, and the fact it was dirt cheap! I had no expectations or pre-conceptions about it, and I thought it was great. I've made these random purchases before, and this was the first time one actually came off! Went out and bought "The Soft Bullett In" soon after, almost as good.

Those that have heard them will have an opinion I'm sure! I think there is some unusual and clever thinking going on behind their music.

Oh yeah -- they were one of the most consistent bands of the '90s.  My favorite is 1993's 'Transmissions from the Satellite Heart.' They were more adventurous before 'Soft Bulletin' and 'Yoshimi,' but that stuff's pretty good too, IMO.

They did a total 'prog' move with their 1997 album, though:  it's got four discs and needs to be played on four stereos simultaneously!

The Lips are great!!! I have all of their studio albums from 1989 on!!!

The best is Yoshimi, but Zaireeka is mind-blowing!!!

I can't wait for At War with the Mystics!!!

and Christmas on Mars!!!!!

Yup, a great band...and find the documentary to rent (can't remember the title...something involving Fabulous Freaks), very interesting and leaves you feeling uplifted from the great positive spirit of the band's leader. I also picked up Yoshimi after hearing the hype and, for once, was not let down. Same with Soft Bulletin...I tried the earlier, more experimental stuff and just couldn't get into it. But I am also really anticipating the new one.

I love Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi, would like to listen to Zaireeka but its too much of a pain to coordianate 4 cd players. (I would have to move my Playstation 2, computer, and DVD player all into the same room and I'd still be short one player).  Not a fan of their earlier material.

Just bought "At War with the Mystics", their new release - very good, some fine songs, but perhaps not as good as "Yoshimi". Despite reading an article in which they claim to have moved in a new direction, sounds very much like son of Yoshimi to me!

Very weird and interesting. I like the later material. I like The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi quite a bit. Their first handful of albums were not very good from what I remember.

I can't deny that I find their catalogue somewhat patchy, but there are
quite a few albums of theirs that I really like. Zaireeka and The Soft
Bulletin are among my favourites of all time, and Transmissions From The
Satellite heart is pretty great as well.
