I`m not a fan of Phil Collins ...I see him as the reason Genesis went to Pop music and I don`t like the mans  arrogance in general ... why don`t you like Phil Collins ?

He's a brilliant musician, but has sadly chosen a career in pop instead of jazz or rock.

In fairness he cannot be blamed for Genesis turning into a pop group. He was not instrumental in this, as it was not his band. Banks and Rutherford were just as much on his wavelength with regard to 'selling out' Just listen to Mike Rutherford ballads such as 'Your own special way' and all that utter crud he churned out years later with his 'mechanics'

Theres a quote I read from Mike Rutherford  that went to the effect that Tony's a stubborn b*****d and you cant get him to do what he dosent want to do.

He is a good drummer theres no doubting that its just he is such a muppet, an 'orrible, whinny little git. He cant write music either just look at his solo albums they all blow big time (except music in the air tonight as I enjoy the bongo drums used)

The man is just evil, he is half of the evil twins of pop, his evil twin brother being Chris de Burge

You can't blame him for turning Genesis to pop. It was a 3-man job and, as Sleeper said, Tony Banks never does anything he doesn't want to do. Maybe Collins is just Banks's puppet?

Collins himself said that he is always the one blamed for "f**king up Genesis" but it wasn't his fault.

I like and admire Phil Collins very much, both as a drummer and a singer. However, I dislike most of his solo career. He writes very good "adult pop music", not my cup of tea but nobody can deny he's very good at it.

Don't be a prog-hole, please...

Well said, great drummer, good singer. I don't really like his solo stuff but I don't see a need to sl*g him off for it - obviously a lot of people do like it.

The people that balme Phil Collins for recking Genesis are the ones that dont know that he originally suggested the band continue as an instrumentul group, that would have been impressive but the others (Banks and Rutherford most likely) didnt like this and prefered to keep a singer.

It's funny that the man gets bashed as much as he's been, but to go off the subject a tad...a customer of mine watched, this past Tuesday the 8th, a news segment on Phil Collins filmed at his house in Switzerland. Inn the interview he mentioned that he was in negotiations with the other members of the band, including Peter, to re-form the band with himself only playing drums for touring purposes. I remember this being a rumor, but now it's been recorded on a major US network (NBC New York Channel 4). So you can bash the man all you want. He's an awesome drummer, wants to do what he does best, and if they DO tour, it's going to be MAJOR, MAJOR, MAJOR!!!!

I was very critical of him for along time, until I learnt more about the band and the other personalities in it. It's true that Banks wore the trousers in Genesis, and no one tells him what to do. He went where he wanted to go.

If they do tour again (please please) with Phil on the drums, will they play any of the post-Lamb Lies Down material? Can they persuade Gabriel to sing "Your own special way"?

I LOVE PHIL COLLINS

  1. Beautiful, unique voice (especially in 1980's Genesis)
  2. Incredible Drummer, for prog (Genesis) or Jazz (brand X)
  3. Key member of Genesis - he is not to blame for the pop direction, they had been moving towards it before h even began writing songs.
  4. Seems like an overall nice guy

I thought that, with the exception of The Lamb witch was solely written by Gabriel, all members of the band were involved with writing the lyrics and that it was Banks that took the band to a pop sound musically but it was only Collins that wrote the popier songs, at least early on anyway.
