I just got their album 'Kallocain' yesterday  and it is wonderful, very lush, the only track i'd say was trip hop influenced is Absinthe Minded though.

Some of 'Coldcuts' own material is pretty good too, quite patchy, but very experimental. I think Ninja is their label (?) A friend of mine used to be their sound engineer.

I can also recommend, not on Ninja, Aphex Twin, and if you like really nice and very experimental ambient electronica, The Boards of Canada. Their album 'Music has the right to children' is a masterpiece.

That's cool oliverstoned. I never doubted your sincerity for a minute.

Don't Progheads out there think that Radiohead are influenced by Portishead/MA - which give them a Progish sound added to the Indie sound they previously had + Pink Floyd trippy/Psych sound of course.

Hey James Lee...what do you think if I put a review like that up here in the archives? I think that would be very imformative. I'll do it on all the ones that haven't been reviewed whether I've heard the band or not

you'll need a few more words to meet the minimum length requirement...may I suggest "very very very very very very very very very very..." etc.

Speaking of BOC (Boards of Canada not Blue Oyster Cult), anyone heard news of their new album? I was expecting a new release by now.

This is an interesting thread. Having also grown up a prog devotee, Its interesting see how peoples musical taste has diversified, but sounds like there are many similarities with mine. Beth Gibbons could serenade me anytime. I now find myself addicted to vinyl again sourced from here.

The link is to an album I bought this week "Tripper" by Efterklang, and is without doubt my album of the year so far. I'm waiting for Bola's impending release which could steal that accolade if his past productions are anything to go by.

"Half Day Closing" from Portishead's self-titled album is about as close in texture to classic Pink Floyd as anything released in the past five years...especially that very last bit with the leslie'd arpeggio.

One band who haven't been mentioned yet is Moorcheeba - maybe not strictly trip hop, but frequently included on trip hop compilations. Their first two albums, Who Can You Trust? and Big Calm, combine jazzy female vocals, slide guitars and trip hop beats with orchestral instruments and analog synths. Not quite in the same league as Portishead, but well worth checking out if you like the other acts mentioned in this thread. After the second album they went rather bland, although I'm told their more recent stuff is a return to form

I got into Portishead a few years ago - and was inspired to write a few Trip Hop tracks on the back of it. I might have a few mp3s still kicking around if anyone's interested...

I like the sound, but the genre hasn't really settled with me like rock music does!

I like Lamb (they are the only trip-hop act I am familiar with, I've got all of their albums).

Trip-hop is one of the few newer (from the mid 90s) genres that sound interesting to me.

Lamb are a great band and very underrated too in my humble opinion.

LAMB!!

How did we forget about them until now on this thread!!?? They are indeed a great and underated band. The mystery of Portishead with the energy and excitement of Drum 'n' Bass. I have 'Fear of fours' and 'What Sound' the latter is my favourite

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
