Always thought of the Cardiacs as an Indie band. Quite liked them though. 'Is this the life?' was a classic. |

They have their proggie moments - Fiery Gun Hand is one of my most favourite prog tracks of the 90's, although the much of the rest of the album Sing To God would be more difficult to claim as prog. |

Nobody's Home - Pink Floyd just for the moment when the background voiceover goes "surprise, surprise, surprise" and Waters sighs "nobody's home" Jethro Tull - Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day cos it's got a great chorus Yes - Wonderous Stories Vangelis - Albedo 0.39 Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas (seasonal and just brilliant - the christmas you get you deserve) Rush - Different Strings - killer minimalist guitar solo Tangerine Dream - Love on a real train

I think the Cardiacs were a bonafide prog band up to the relase of "On Land and in the Sea". The departure of keyboard player Bill Drake and sax player Sarah Smith led to a more streamlined sound with less fiddly bits, more streamlined songs, more guitar and a bigger emphasis on a "wall of guitars" sound similar to what Devin Townsend is currently doing. Bill and Sarah were of course still working with Tim Smith as the Cardiacs offshoot "The Sea Nymphs" but it meant that that particular proggy side of the Cardiacs was now not as well represented. |
