Topic: Primus Posted: June 01 2006 at 08:52 |
This morning, while I was working at my PC, I listened to the four Primus MP3s available on PA. I'd already heard something from this band some time ago and was quite impressed. Now I'd like to get to know them better, as those four tracks were really excellent and intriguing. What is their best album, to start with? Ah, BTW: why are they in Prog-related? From what I've heard, they seem quite fully prog to me - but then, I'm no expert.

I would start with their excellent album Sailing the Seas of Cheese.
Also delve into some of Les Claypool's many, many side projects like Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains,Oysterhead and Les Claypool's Frog Brigade.

Frizzle Fry and (though not technically a Primus album) The Big Eyeball in the Sky by Col. Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains.
Those be my favoured few.

Also check out their DVD "Hallucino-Genetics: Live 2004" ... which, among other songs, contains a complete performance of Frizzle Fry.

I think the same. I've got into Primus recently and now I have 3 of their CDs and they seem proggier or as proggy as a lot of bands I've seen into fully prog genres...

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! I don't know how easy it will be for me to actually find the records, but I will sure try. I was really impressed by what I heard - and then I read that Les Claypool is a huge Rush fan! That's the band for me!

Great DVD! I saw them on that tour and it was pretty amazing, especially their psyched-out treatment of Frizzle Fry. as for the Rush influence, Les's favorite bass is autographed by Geddy. They have also stated that they are heavily influenced by King Crimson. I think in one of the Primus FAQs I have read, Les states "Yes, we are a blatant King Crimson rip-off band."

It's my favorite from the 3 I have (Pork Soda, Tales from the punchbowl and Sailing the seas of cheese) BTW, is Tales from the punchbowl a parody of Tales from Topographic oceans?

Primus has some excellent material, but most of their albums seemed really inconsistent to me. Maybe it was just my taste at the time I heard most of them, but I could barely ever get through an album, except Sailing the Seas... Some of the songs are way too repetitive, and some I just don't/didn't get.

I would start with Frizzle Fry, and then you can also try some of Les Claypool's "non-primus" work, like Purple Onion (Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade) or Oysterhead.
But I enjoy all Primus albums, they're great.

Start with "Frizzle Fry", definitely. That and "Tales From the Punchbowl" are my favorites. "Pork Soda" took me awhile to appreciate, as it is much "darker" than their other stuff.
Also, their stuff with Herb Alexander is better than their stuff with Brian Mantia. But it's all good.

Primus is fun. I have "Seas of Cheese" and "Pork Soda" but haven't listened to them in many years. Perhaps time to dust them off.

Once you've digested Primus (and I second Progtologist's recommendation
on Sailing the Seas), I'd recommend moving on to The Residents. They're
one of Les' primary influences.
I'll warn you, however... they're VERY odd.

The Residents are not only odd but chillingly creepy at times.

For beginners start with Sailing the Seas of Cheese. If you enjoyed that like myself, get Pork Soda which is another great release from primusand the end of their "early era (fizzle fry, sailing the seas of cheese, and pork soda)"
If you want more, try Tales from the Punchbowl and the Brown Album. I have the five mentioned albums, and they are all good, however, Tales from the Punchbowl is the worst of the five. Do not get Antipop, it sucks.
If you want more claypool material, get Grand Peckng Order-Oysterhead. Trey Anastasio (Phish), Stewart Copeland (the Police), and Les Claypool (primus) its simply amazing, perhaps one of the best albums of the 2000's.
