Christmas is coming and many of us are looking for presants to give their little cousin's, or brothers etc. I encourage you all to buy them good music. They will probably ask for pop crap music, but don't give in. Do them a favour and keep them away from the terrible music they're being fed on the radio, and TV.

You're totally right, I'm trying to feed my little brother with prog music, and it kindof works  at least he likes Yes and the early King Crimson, and some Pink Floyd. I'm sure he'll become a prog-fan later

But I won't give him a present this year, because I don't see him, haha (im on exchange, far away from home).

I have to buy my hostmother a robbie williams - cd though, shame on me.       But it's probably too late to give her the right musical education anyways

Yeah, but it's not 50%-50%

at least 90% won't change

I've been trying to get my brother hooked on Rush. I think it is a perfect intro into prog rock for him because he likes hard rock.  He doesn't really give anything a chance unless they sound like Ted Nugent, AC/DC, or Kiss. (None of which I particularly enjoy) Music is an important part of my life so getting people into great music brings me great joy, but he won't give it a chance.

I've hooked my friend with Ayreon's "Human Equation," but I don't think he'll be a major convert. He's not a prog type, and he always says he hates it because I listen to it so much and I bash his Rammstein music all the time. Recently I said that Rammstein isn't that bad, it's good but not what I really like to listen to, and I think there's a connection: right afterwards he commented on how good "Human Equation" sounded.

But anyway, my cousin and I are both into prog, as is my uncle. I'm asking for some stuff from them to burn, and they're asking for me to burn some stuff for them.

I know!!!! I feel exactly the same, but it's so hard to get them into prog, for 70% it's even hopeless. The only exception is Pink Floyd, everybody likes them

If they knew what they're missing .....

Pink Floyd is probably the best band to start with.

I say buy them two albums: In the Court of the Crimson King and The Carpenter's Greatest Hits, and let them make up their own minds...

Peace.

Why do I feel like I've gone back to high school in this thread???

Yeh, you think Pink Floyd is the band to start with till you give them Meddle or Atom Heart Mother... then they'll think you're suicidal or something...

I'm with Maani - ITCOTCK... is the best present!

You're right, ITCOTCK does work, i gave it to a girl that likes punk bands like greenday, simple plan ..... and she loves it!   but then i expected her to love camel-stuff, but she didn't =(

Yeah, I'm in high school also. Everybody there seems to be into mainly one of three things, rap, really annoying metal(i.e. Slipknot) and sh*tty punk/emo/hardcore. Everybody listens to it cuz they think its cool but it doesn't have any redeeming qualities so there is no point to it.  It sickens me.

I couldn't agree more, at least 95% of students like at least one of those three categories. The rest mostly likes really good music (classic rock, jazz), but nobody really shares my opinion about prog ... Some like a few bands and songs, but nobody's really interested in getting more into it

I also think that music plays a different role for them, it's either used for dancing (what is okey of course, u obviously can't dance to prog music, so u need other stuff) or to show that you belong to a certain group (or because you think the artist's cute, haha). I can hardly imagine that they really sit down and start listening to their music (and concentrating on it) when they're alone.

Well, they just don't know real music, poor them!

i don't think a music can't have any redeeming
qualities because you don't like it. there is obviously
something about it that people like, otherwise it
wouldn't be popular. it's like slipknot .
person: "grrr, i'm angry *turns on tv* wow! this band
sounds terrible and is angry. i'm gonna buy there
stuff cause they have a sound that i bet isn't popular"
repeat until it becomes popular. it happens when
counter-culturs become pop-cultur, and they loose
every that was counter-cultur abour them. so my
point is...uhm...yup. and most people will tend to like
some of the same bands you do if you just talk to
them.

You can't expose a child to King Crimson, that's cruelty, there should be a law against that.
