I find this band to be really really fantastic. I have been listening to them for a year before prog, so I have always been a fan of these guys.
I know their lyrics and beets may seem like "hip hop" or rap, but thier deffinetly not. Especially thier new album Don't Tread on Me. Their lyrics are mature and well thought out, especially thier veiws on life and religion/getting high.
Thier music ranges between "reage" or "funk" with a small hip hop edge, and is recomended for those who doubt the ability of "hip hop".
The rap like beats played with instruments really add that african/trible vibe to thier overall sound, which has progressed with every album.
I highly recomend this band to anyone into progressive hip hop, funk, hard rock/blues, metal, psycedelic music, and prog related contemporary bands.

I'm not afraid to say I like 311. My roommate is a huuuuge fan of theirs, so I've really had no choice but to like them. My favorite album from them is Transistor, but the new one is OK. The vocal harmonies on "Thank Your Lucky Stars" are killer. Forgot to say: they're coming to Virginia Tech in August... gonna be an awesome show!

I don't like them or the band they're commonly talked about with, Sublime. Neither of those are horrible per se, just nothing I'd want to listen to on my spare time.

I've seen them live and have/had:
Music
311
Grassroots
From Chaos
Evolver
They're OK. My favorite albums are From Chaos and Evolver. Their earliers tuff is rather samey and boring.

apparently you and a few thousand conservative soccer moms are the only people left in the world who still believe this. The thing they forgot to consider in this argument is the fact that at least 2 of the band members are hispanic. so I just hope youre not serious when you make that claim... As for the Sublime comparison, I've never understood it really. Sublime holds a lot more ska influence whereas 311 is mostly rock. When they get down into a good metal groove they can be really tight.

And Gene Simmons' band is actually called Knights in Satans Service, Malcom Young plays with Anti-Christ/Dead Christ...

An OK band. They did a pretty decent version of The Cure's Lovesong.

I live in their hometown so they are pretty famous around here. I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and bought three of their albums at once. First and last time I'll do that. What a waste. Don't like them.
